The Force is stirring once again in Hollywood, and this time it’s beckoning “X-Men” mastermind Simon Kinberg to chart the next chapter in the Star Wars saga. Lucasfilm has tapped the acclaimed writer-producer to craft a groundbreaking new trilogy that promises to venture beyond the familiar confines of the Skywalker narrative.

In a bold move that signals a fresh direction for the beloved franchise, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy is joining forces with Kinberg to explore uncharted corners of that galaxy far, far away. While the epic Skywalker saga concluded in 2019 with “The Rise of Skywalker,” this new trilogy aims to introduce audiences to entirely new heroes, villains, and worlds never before seen in the Star Wars universe.
The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for the franchise, with Disney already plotting an ambitious return to the big screen. “The Mandalorian & Grogu” – the highly anticipated theatrical debut of the helmet-wearing bounty hunter and his adorable green companion – is set to blast into theaters on May 22, 2026. Two more mysterious Star Wars projects are penciled in for December 2026 and 2027, though their details remain shrouded in secrecy.

Kinberg brings impressive credentials to the Star Wars universe. His fingerprints can be found on some of Hollywood’s biggest hits, including “Logan,” “Deadpool,” and several cornerstone X-Men films. He’s no stranger to the Star Wars family either, having co-created the beloved animated series “Star Wars: Rebels” alongside Dave Filoni and previously contributed to “The Force Awakens.”
The Star Wars production pipeline is bustling with creative energy, with an all-star lineup of filmmakers including James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover all developing their own visions within the universe. However, Star Wars fans know better than to count their porgs before they hatch – previous announced projects from heavyweight creators like Patty Jenkins and “Game of Thrones” duo Benioff and Weiss never made it to lightspeed.

Since the Skywalker saga’s conclusion, Star Wars has found tremendous success on Disney+, spawning a collection of hit series including “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” and “Ahsoka.” The streaming platform continues to expand with upcoming shows like “Skeleton Crew” and “The Acolyte” on the horizon.
While Kinberg’s trilogy remains in its early stages, the writer-producer isn’t letting the grass grow under his feet. He’s currently producing Paramount and Edgar Wright’s reimagining of “The Running Man” starring Glen Powell and Josh Brolin, while also helping to chart the course for the next “Star Trek” adventure under director Toby Haynes.
As the Star Wars universe continues to expand, one thing is certain: the saga that began with a farm boy gazing at twin suns is about to enter an exciting new era under Kinberg’s creative guidance.
