‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Trailer Revives Michael Keaton in Long-Awaited Sequel

by Jake Laycock

Tim Burton’s eagerly awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is set to hit theaters on September 6, bringing Michael Keaton back in the titular role. The first full trailer has been released, showcasing Keaton’s return as the mischievous demon alongside an ensemble cast including Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe.

The film centers on Lydia Deetz (Ryder) and her family, who return home to Winter River after a tragic event. The plot thickens when Lydia’s rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid (Ortega), accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife, unleashing Beetlejuice once more. The teaser trailer, which debuted in March, featured Keaton’s character making a dramatic return with the line, “The juice is loose.”

Directed by Tim Burton, the sequel’s screenplay is penned by Wednesday showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with Seth Grahame-Smith contributing to the story. The production team includes Burton, Dede Gardner, Tommy Harper, Jeremy Kleiner, and Marc Toberoff.

The original Beetlejuice, released in 1988, grossed $73 million at the box office (equivalent to $195 million today) and won the Oscar for Best Makeup. Its success led to a TV animated series and a Broadway musical.

The new trailer, over two minutes long, reveals more about the sequel’s plot and Burton’s signature practical effects, with ghoulish set pieces and nods to the original film’s iconic creatures and lines. The footage was first shown at CinemaCon, where Burton expressed his interest in revisiting the Deetz family’s story. Keaton, enthusiastic about the project, revealed he has already watched the film twice and praised it highly.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice promises a blend of nostalgia and new thrills as it continues the legacy of the beloved horror-comedy. Fans can look forward to seeing the chaos unfold when the film hits theaters on September 6, 2024.
