Series creator Loren Bouchard Opens Up About the Pressure of 300 Episodes and What’s Next
After 300 episodes and counting, Bob’s Burgers shows no signs of flipping its final burger. Series creator Loren Bouchard recently opened up about the beloved animated comedy’s future, confirming plans for a movie sequel while admitting he has no concrete ideas for how—or when—the series might end.
A Four-Season Order That’s Both Gift and Challenge
Earlier this year, The Walt Disney Company delivered a massive vote of confidence in the Belcher family, handing Bob’s Burgers a supersized four-season renewal that extends the show through 2029. Speaking with ComicBook at New York Comic Con, Bouchard discussed what it takes to keep the series fresh after reaching such an impressive milestone.
While an order of this magnitude might seem like it would create enormous pressure, Bouchard revealed the real source of stress comes from elsewhere: the fans themselves.
“The show at this point is insane pressure,” Bouchard explained. “And here’s why. It’s not because of how many episodes they want. It’s just how many we’ve done. You can’t repeat yourself. The fans are watching all of them. They also are sometimes watching them like the night before. So like, for us, it’s 10 years ago. We might forget, but they don’t. So you can’t repeat yourself. So, you’re shooting in between your shots that have already hit the bullseye and so it’s getting harder and harder. That’s the pressure.”
Big Screen Dreams: A Second Movie Is on Bouchard’s Wishlist
The Bob’s Burgers Movie finally arrived in theaters in 2022, achieving what many long-running animated series aspire to: a feature film adaptation. While the movie earned critical acclaim, its box office performance proved modest, with the film ultimately finding its true audience on streaming platforms.
Despite not becoming a theatrical phenomenon, the experience hasn’t dampened enthusiasm for returning to the big screen. Following news that The Simpsons is developing a second feature film, Bouchard expressed genuine interest in crafting another Bob’s Burgers movie.
“Absolutely,” Bouchard said when asked about sequel possibilities. “No word on it, but it was so fun. It was so fun to make that thing, and it was so good for us. It was good for the show, and I will do another one any day.”
No Ending in Sight—By Design
Perhaps most intriguing is Bouchard’s candid admission that despite the series’ longevity, there’s no planned conclusion for Bob’s Burgers. His philosophy? As long as fans keep watching, the team will keep creating.
However, this open-ended approach presents its own unique challenge.
“It would feel lazy,” Bouchard said when discussing the idea of planning an ending. “I think this is one of those… this is a deal you make where you say, ‘I can’t stop it if people still want it.’ That’s just me being tired, but I can’t get tired. I just, I’ll have to like take vitamins.”
It’s a perspective that speaks to both dedication and the reality of working on a long-running series. Bouchard recognizes the responsibility that comes with fan devotion—the show must continue as long as audiences remain invested, even when exhaustion sets in.
The Question Bouchard Dreads
For fans who might encounter Bouchard at conventions or on the street, he offered one piece of advice: don’t ask about his favorite burger of the day.
“You know, we do at least one every show, if not multiples. And I should have like one or two or 10 in my back pocket that I’m always ready to be like, I’ve got one for you, What’s my favorite burger of the day? And I blank every time anyone asks me.”
It’s a relatable admission from a creator who’s crafted hundreds of punny burger names over the years—sometimes the most obvious question is the hardest to answer.
As Bob’s Burgers continues serving up new episodes through the end of the decade, one thing remains clear: the Belcher family’s story is far from over, and Bouchard isn’t ready to close up shop just yet.
