The next chapter of the Buffyverse has its lead: Rising star Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Firestarter, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) will play the new Slayer opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar, who reprises her iconic role as Buffy Summers in the untitled Hulu pilot.
The project, described as a continuation of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe, has landed Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) to helm the pilot, written by showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Prodigal Son).
Armstrong’s casting as the new Slayer—an introverted high school student—holds symbolic weight: Her name, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, mirrors the rhythmic cadence of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s. But Gellar insists it was Armstrong’s raw talent that sealed the deal.

“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl I wanted by my side,” Gellar said. “To have that kind of emotional intelligence and skill at such a young age is rare. And her smile lights up even the darkest room.”
Gellar surprised the 15-year-old actor with the life-changing news in a heartfelt video call, capturing Armstrong’s tearful reaction. “I’m so honored—thank you for trusting me,” Armstrong said as her father, Canadian actor-producer Dean Armstrong, joined the celebration.
The Zuckerman sisters echoed Gellar’s enthusiasm, declaring in true Buffy fashion: “Ryan blew us away. There’s no question—she is the Chosen One.”
A Legacy Reborn
The reboot, produced by 20th Television and Searchlight TV, unites original Buffy executive producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, and Kaz Kuzui, alongside Gellar and Zhao. Notably, Dolly Parton—whose Sandollar Productions backed the 1992 film—also returns as an executive producer.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong’s Rising Star
The Canadian-born actor has been a standout since her breakout at age 8 in The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019). She’s since appeared in IT: Chapter Two, Black Widow, and The Tomorrow War, and led the 2022 remake of Firestarter. On TV, she’s shone in Anne with an E, American Horror Story: Red Tide, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew opposite Jude Law.
Armstrong’s upcoming projects include FX’s The Lowdown with Ethan Hawke. She is repped by Linden Entertainment and Innovative Artists.
The untitled Buffy pilot is currently in development at Hulu.
