Get ready, soldiers.

The battlefield is moving from your console to the big screen. In a major move that marks a new era for video game adaptations, Paramount and Activision have struck a landmark deal to turn the iconic Call of Duty franchise into a live-action film.

Paramount CEO David Ellison, a self-proclaimed lifelong fan of the series, called the deal a “dream come true.” The partnership is set to create, produce, and distribute a movie that promises to capture the very essence of the beloved first-person shooter. The goal is to thrill the game’s massive global fanbase while also bringing the franchise to a new generation of moviegoers.

The Most Coveted IP

For years, Call of Duty has been the holy grail of unexploited video game IP. With over half a billion copies sold and a 16-year reign as the top-selling game franchise in the U.S., its legacy is undeniable. The series has taken players everywhere, from the battlefields of World War II to futuristic combat zones, and now, it’s ready to tell those stories on a cinematic scale.

The entertainment industry is in the midst of a video game gold rush. Universal and Illumination’s Super Mario films have already proven the billion-dollar potential of these adaptations. Paramount itself has found success with the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and major films based on The Legend of Zelda, Street Fighter, and Elden Ring are all in the pipeline. But none of these IPs have the sheer scale, history, and global recognition of Call of Duty.

A “Top Gun: Maverick”-Level Commitment

David Ellison isn’t taking this responsibility lightly. In a statement, he drew a direct line from this project to one of his studio’s biggest recent hits. “We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick,” he said. The team’s mission is simple: to create a cinematic experience that honors the game’s legacy while captivating a whole new audience.

The deal with Activision is one of many high-profile moves Paramount has made since Ellison and Skydance took control of the company last month. This includes a massive $7.7 billion deal for UFC rights and a multi-year partnership with the Duffer brothers, the creators of Stranger Things. The aggressive strategy clearly signals Paramount’s intent to build a new slate of top-tier IP, and the Call of Duty franchise is a major step in that direction.

Activision President Rob Kostich shared in Ellison’s enthusiasm. He said the film will “take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment.” Both companies are committed to creating an “unforgettable blockbuster movie experience” that the Call of Duty community will love.

The wait is on, but it’s safe to say that the world’s most famous first-person shooter is finally getting its big-screen mission.
