Forty years. It is a milestone few franchises ever reach, and even fewer do so while remaining at the absolute pinnacle of global pop culture. This weekend, the Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary celebrations reached a fever pitch at the Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri in Japan. Held at the massive Makuhari Messe near Tokyo, the event was a bittersweet yet electrifying tribute to the late, great Akira Toriyama.

As fans, we went in with high hopes and left with a roadmap that ensures the Saiyan fire will burn brightly well into 2027. Between exclusive merchandise and heart-pounding live contests, the main stage delivered what can only be described as a “Senzu Bean for the soul”: two new anime series, a mysterious new game project, and “massive” updates for the reigning king of fighting games, Sparking! ZERO.

The Legend Returns: Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol (Moro Arc)

For years, the “When is the Moro Arc getting animated?” memes have dominated social media. Finally, the wait is over. The event kicked off with a legendary appearance by Masako Nozawa (the voice of Son Goku) and executive producer Akio Iyoku. They premiered a stunning 40th-anniversary tribute video featuring music specially composed by none other than Hans Zimmer. Titled “Infinite Future,” the score perfectly captured the evolution of the series from its humble Journey to the West roots to the cosmic battles of today.

The video concluded with the official reveal of Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol. This new series will adapt the beloved Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc (Moro Arc), which covers chapters 42 to 67 of the manga. For those who haven’t kept up with the printed page, this story picks up immediately after the Universe Survival Arc and introduces one of the most terrifying villains in the franchise: Planet-Eater Moro.

This isn’t just another tournament; it’s a high-stakes space opera that forces Goku and Vegeta to join the Galactic Patrol. While the series is currently in production, the team confirmed a 2027 release window. It’s a bit of a wait, but if the teaser’s animation quality is any indication, we are in for a cinematic experience that honors Toriyama’s vision more faithfully than ever before.

Unlocking the Vault: The Age 1000 Game Project

Perhaps the most surprising reveal was the announcement of Age 1000, a new game project that has been shrouded in secrecy for nearly seven years. Producer Masayuki Hirano took the stage to share a trailer that sent shockwaves through the fandom.

Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary

The Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary is particularly poignant because it marks some of the final work Toriyama-sensei completed before his passing in 2024. Hirano revealed that Toriyama was “heavily involved” in the world-building and character designs for Age 1000. The trailer showcased a mysterious, grey-haired youth sporting Capsule Corp gear. While many are speculating this could be a new Super Saiyan variant or a descendant of a familiar hero, Hirano remained tight-lipped.

The title itself, “Age 1000,” is a direct nod to the timeline used in Dragon Ball Online—a project Toriyama originally poured years of lore into. This suggests the game might finally bring those deep-cut stories to a global audience. We won’t have to wait long for more info, as a full deep-dive is scheduled for Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2026 in Los Angeles this April.

The Ultimate Roster: Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO DLC Updates

If you thought the base roster of Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO was huge, you haven’t seen anything yet. Producer Jun Furutani announced a “massive” DLC expansion coming this summer. The trailer confirmed several fan-favorite inclusions that had been missing:

  • Super Android 17 (GT)
  • Demon King Piccolo (Original DB)
  • Super Saiyan Bardock
  • Pikkon and King Tao

In a move that brought many veteran fans to tears, the DLC will feature a new theme song, “Zero,” performed by the legendary Hironobu Kageyama. This is his first major contribution to the franchise in 18 years, and he described the track as a “powerful energy boost” for the players.

For those playing on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam, the “Mission 100” single-player mode arrives as a free update on January 26, 2026. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 players, hang tight—Furutani promised that your versions are being optimized and will receive all DLC and updates later this year.

A Fresh Perspective: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus

To close out the afternoon, the team announced Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, a complete “Enhanced Edition” of the series’ first arc. Coming in Fall 2026, this isn’t just a simple remaster. Akio Iyoku described it as a “reconstruction” designed to be more faithful to Toriyama’s original manga drafts.

Dragon Ball Super: Beerus

The project features:

Redrawn Animation: Entire sequences have been updated with modern, high-fidelity cuts.

Narrative Reworks: A tighter focus on the God of Destruction’s terrifying nature rather than just his love for Earth’s food.

Enhanced Battles: The “Super Saiyan God vs. Beerus” fight has been “fully reshot” to deliver more impact and immersion.

The goal is to present Beerus as the formidable threat he was always meant to be. As his voice actor Koichi Yamadera put it: “He’s not just a weird uncle; he’s the God of Destruction, and it’s time everyone remembered that.”

The Legacy Continues

The Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary event proved that while we may have lost the creator, the world he built is in capable, loving hands. From the cosmic stakes of the Moro Arc to the mysterious new frontiers of Age 1000, there is enough content on the horizon to keep us screaming “Kamehameha” for another forty years.

Which announcement from the Genkidamatsuri has you the most hyped? Are you ready for the Moro Arc, or are you more excited to see the “Enhanced” Beerus? Let us know in the comments below!
