Edgar Wright is currently in discussions to helm the upcoming “Barbarella” movie, starring Sydney Sweeney, under Sony’s banner. Joining the creative team are potential screenwriters Jane Goldman and Honey Ross.

Wright, celebrated for his witty take on the zombie genre in “Shaun of the Dead,” is on the verge of steering Glen Powell in an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man.” His repertoire includes acclaimed films such as “Last Night in Soho,” “Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” and “Baby Driver.”
This project extends Sweeney’s collaboration with Sony Pictures, following her appearances in “Anyone but You” and “Madame Web.” Despite mixed reviews for the latter, Sweeney views her involvement as a strategic career move, fostering ties with Sony’s decision-makers.
“For me, ‘Madame Web’ was pivotal. It paved the way for my relationship with Sony,” Sweeney stated. “Every career move I make is not just about the story but also about strategic planning. Thanks to ‘Madame Web,’ I landed ‘Anyone but You’ and now ‘Barbarella.'”

Sweeney hinted at her role in “Barbarella” back in October 2022, teasing her followers with a photo of the iconic heroine accompanied by the caption, “Time to save the universe.”
Originating from the comic series by French artist Jean-Claude Forest, the 1968 film adaptation starred Jane Fonda as Barbarella. While not a commercial hit initially, it achieved cult status over time, becoming one of Fonda’s most memorable roles.

Despite various attempts to revive “Barbarella” over the years, none have materialized. Fonda expressed apprehension about the reboot in 2023, voicing concerns about its direction.
