The Legend of Zelda film, produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad and directed by Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), is set for release on May 7, 2027. The core villain, Ganondorf (who transforms into the monstrous Ganon), is the Gerudo King and a powerful sorcerer driven by greed to conquer Hyrule and acquire the Triforce of Power. This role demands an actor who can switch seamlessly between a calculating, humanoid villain and an imposing force of dark magic.

Here are the 10 actors who would make an ideal Ganon/Ganondorf:

10. Javier Bardem

Javier Bardem is frequently suggested for his strong performances in complex villain roles. His portrayal in films like Dune shows his ability to convey deep-seated power and intensity with minimal dialogue. He has the theatrical gravitas to play the cunning Gerudo King, especially in the more subtle, sorcerer-focused early stages of the character.

9. Idris Elba

A perennial fan favorite for the role, Idris Elba is praised for his powerful, booming voice and incredibly commanding screen presence. He could easily sell both the noble but corrupted Gerudo King and the terrifying, final boss energy needed for the character’s transformation. His experience in major fantasy and sci-fi franchises (Thor, Prometheus) proves he can take genre roles seriously.

8. Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa is often cited for his formidable physique and extensive experience in action and fantasy roles like Aquaman and Game of Thrones. His sheer physical stature is a great match for Ganondorf’s imposing height, and he has demonstrated an ability to channel a raw, animalistic quality, which could be utilized when the character transforms into the boar-like Ganon.

7. Dave Bautista

Known for his work in physically demanding roles, such as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy, Dave Bautista brings a hulking, physically imposing build that perfectly aligns with Ganondorf’s formidable appearance. His career progression has also shown he is a surprisingly subtle actor, suggesting he could bring depth to the King’s calculating side before unleashing the brute force required for battle.

6. Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill is frequently championed by fans due to his imposing presence and previous experience portraying heroic fantasy figures like Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher and Superman. His ability to project immense physical strength, coupled with his deep, intense voice, makes him a strong contender who could bring a serious, classical blockbuster villain quality to the role.

5. Alexander Skarsgård

With a large physical presence and a vocal ability that can shift from quiet intensity to a booming menace, Alexander Skarsgård is a strong fit for the villainous role. His performances in projects like The Northman have showcased his capacity for primal ferocity and commanding leadership, elements essential for a warrior king driven to conquest.

4. Shun Oguri

A major star in Japan, Shun Oguri is known to American audiences for his role in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). Oguri is on the rise globally, and showcasing an evil, ambitious villain in a high-profile feature like Zelda might be the perfect next step. Casting him would also honor the franchise’s Japanese heritage while introducing a fresh, intense performer to a global audience.

3. Tyler Hoechlin

Primarily known for heroic roles like Superman and Derek Hale on Teen Wolf, Tyler Hoechlin has a strong, imposing physical build that could lend itself well to Ganondorf’s powerful and formidable appearance. His background in both TV and feature films, combined with his physical preparation, makes him an unexpected but highly capable contender for a physically demanding role.

2. Mark Strong

Viewed as a strong contender due to his rich history of playing sophisticated, silver-tongued villains and complex antagonists. Mark Strong thrives at crafting antagonists who are subtle in their villainy, an excellent fit for the initial, human form of Ganondorf. His commanding screen presence and ability to project intelligence and simmering anger make him an ideal choice for the King’s sorcerer side.

1. Winston Duke

Winston Duke tops this list as he is often mentioned for his genuinely commanding, towering performance as M’Baku in Black Panther. Standing at an imposing 6’5″, Duke is arguably the best choice from a physical perspective to match Ganondorf’s canonical height and build. His role as the menacing Abraham in Jordan Peele’s Us also proves his ability to play a truly formidable, physically dominant villain. He brings both the commanding stature and the necessary dramatic presence.
