‘Inside Out 2’ Dominates Box Office, Passes ‘Dune 2’ As It Races Towards $1 Billion

by Jake Laycock

Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” is rocking the box office, pulling in a whopping $100 million in its second weekend. That’s just a 35% drop from its massive $154 million debut, making it the biggest second weekend ever for an animated film and the seventh-largest of all time.

Crushing the Competition

“Inside Out 2” isn’t just doing well; it’s doing better than its 2015 predecessor, which made $90 million in its opening weekend. The only films with bigger second weekends are some serious heavyweights: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Infinity War,” “Black Panther,” “Jurassic World,” and “The Avengers.”

On the Road to $1 Billion

With $355 million from North America and $724 million globally so far, “Inside Out 2” has already surpassed “Dune: Part II” to become the biggest movie of the year. It’s also on track to join the exclusive $1 billion club. Joy and her friends are definitely living up to their names!

Movie Theaters Rejoice

This summer has been a bit of a bummer for cinemas, but “Inside Out 2” is bringing back the smiles. The film’s success has shrunk the year-to-date deficit for theaters from 23.8% to 21%, and the hits keep coming with upcoming releases like “A Quiet Place: Day One,” “Despicable Me 4,” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

New Releases: Hits and Misses

Among the new releases, “The Bikeriders” rode into third place with $10 million. Directed by Jeff Nichols and starring Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, and Tom Hardy, this film about a Midwestern motorcycle club has a decent start, especially considering its $35 million budget.

Unfortunately, not all newcomers fared as well. Russell Crowe’s thriller “The Exorcism” landed in seventh place with a lackluster $2.43 million, while June Squibb’s action-adventure “Thelma” pulled in $2.2 million. Critics and audiences didn’t seem too thrilled with these titles, giving them mixed to poor reviews.

Holdovers Still Strong

Meanwhile, familiar favorites continue to perform well. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is holding steady in second place, making $19 million in its third weekend. This buddy-cop comedy starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence has raked in $147 million in North America and $289.1 million globally.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” swung into fourth place with $3.6 million, while “The Garfield Movie” clawed its way to fifth with $3.6 million. Both films are proving to be solid performers, especially given their production costs.

Limited Releases and Surprises

In limited release, Yorgos Lanthimos’ surrealist comedy “Kinds of Kindness” scored big, grossing $350,000 from just five locations, making it the year’s best limited opening. A24’s coming-of-age story “Janet Planet” also made a splash, collecting $49,684 from two screens.

Looking Ahead

As “Inside Out 2” continues to dominate, all eyes are on the upcoming summer blockbusters to see if they can keep the momentum going. With more exciting releases just around the corner, it’s shaping up to be an interesting season for movie lovers everywhere!
