It seems the Mockingjay isn’t quite finished with Panem just yet. After weeks of whispers and “leaked” reports, Jennifer Lawrence has finally broken her silence regarding her potential return to the franchise that made her a global superstar.

While appearing on a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, the Oscar-winning actress was directly confronted with rumors regarding the upcoming prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. When Horowitz suggested she should “catch up” with director Francis Lawrence (who is helming the new film), Lawrence dropped a major hint with a playful, “Maybe we already have.”

The teaser didn’t stop there. After Horowitz referenced the internet’s obsession with her casting, Lawrence replied with a coy smile, “Oh yeah, it is out on the Internet, isn’t it?” When pressed if fans should officially expect to see her in the film, she gave a subtle smile and a definitive, “Yes. Yeah.”

How Can Katniss Return? The Epilogue Theory

The news has left fans reeling with one major question: How? Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years before the events of the original 2012 film. It focuses on the 50th Hunger Games—the Second Quarter Quell—which was famously won by a young Haymitch Abernathy. Given the timeline, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark (played by Josh Hutcherson) wouldn’t even be born yet during the main events of the film.

However, readers of Suzanne Collins’ latest novel know exactly how the movie might pull this off. The book features a present-day epilogue set years after the rebellion has ended. In this scene, a battle-scarred but healing Haymitch recounts his history to Katniss and Peeta as they help him document the archives of Panem. It is a moment of profound “found family” that serves as the perfect emotional bridge between the prequel and the original trilogy.

A Star-Studded Panem

While the return of Lawrence and Hutcherson is the headline-grabber, the rest of the cast is shaping up to be the most prestigious in the franchise’s history.

With Francis Lawrence returning to the director’s chair and a screenplay by Billy Ray, the film is looking to recapture the gritty, prestige-drama feel of Catching Fire.

The Countdown Begins

Jennifer Lawrence last graced our screens as Katniss in 2015’s Mockingjay — Part 2. Seeing her return to the role, even for a brief flash-forward, would be a monumental moment for a fandom that has only grown more dedicated over the last decade.

Whether she’s mentoring a new generation or simply sharing a quiet moment of peace with Peeta in the District 12 meadows, the Return of the Kat(niss) is officially the most anticipated cinematic event of the year.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26. Watch the first teaser trailer here:
