Prepare your second breakfast and pack your walking staff: Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy is making an epic return to the big screen. In honor of the 25th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. are bringing all three beloved Extended Edition films back to theaters for a limited engagement in early 2026.

This is a rare opportunity for fans old and new to experience J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth saga in its ultimate, sprawling form—a commitment of over 11 and a half hours of cinematic adventure.

A Cinematic Pilgrimage: Screening Details

The films will be presented across two weekends in January 2026, giving audiences a chance to fully immerse themselves in the world of Hobbits, Elves, and Orcs.

The event will kick off with an enhanced theatrical experience, followed by a week of standard screenings:

  • DBOX Presentations: The full trilogy will screen in the immersive DBOX format from January 16-19, 2026.
  • Standard Theatrical Screenings: The films will return to standard formats from January 23-25, 2026.

The Extended Editions, which add substantial runtime and depth compared to the theatrical cuts (which clocked in at just over nine hours total), are often considered the definitive way to experience the saga. These longer versions, originally released on home video a year after their theatrical counterparts, incorporate additional scenes that flesh out the characters, lore, and narrative, making the commitment well worth the journey.

Fellowship Swag: Exclusive Concessions

For the dedicated collectors heading back to the theater, Fathom and Warner Bros. are offering special limited-edition themed concession items at participating cinemas.

  • AMC Theatres moviegoers can look for limited-edition popcorn buckets featuring detailed maps of Middle-earth.
  • Regal and local cinema patrons will be able to purchase collectible popcorn buckets designed to resemble the iconic One Ring.

This theatrical return, which is being promoted with a new 25th-anniversary logo and trailer, follows a successful 4K Ultra remastering rerelease of the extended editions by Fathom and Warner Bros. in 2024.

A Legacy Measured in Oscars and Billions

The film series, adapted from Tolkien’s epic novels, holds an almost unparalleled place in film history. The three films, which were famously shot back-to-back in New Zealand, were originally released by New Line Cinema between 2001 and 2003. Peter Jackson directed and co-wrote the screenplays with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

Collectively, the trilogy:

  • Grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide at the global box office.
  • Won 17 Academy Awards in total.
  • Culminated with The Return of the King taking home a staggering 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, tying the record for the most Oscars won by a single film (alongside Ben-Hur and Titanic).

The enduring success of the trilogy, which Jackson later followed up with The Hobbit trilogy (2012-2014), ensures that this 25th-anniversary screening is more than just a nostalgic trip—it’s a celebration of one of the most creatively and commercially successful film franchises ever made.
