Mike Colter Teases “Unfinished Business” and a Potential MCU Return as Luke Cage

Mike Colter’s shift from a definitive "no" to a hopeful "yes" is the biggest news for Defenders fans in years.

For nearly eight years, the streets of Harlem have been surprisingly quiet. Ever since the abrupt and controversial cancellation of Marvel’s Netflix lineup in 2018, fans have been clamoring for the return of the “Power Man.” While we’ve seen Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin successfully migrate to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, one unbreakable hero remained in the shadows.

Until now.

Mike Colter has finally broken his silence, and the update is more than just a hopeful “maybe.” In a recent appearance on Shawn Stockman’s On That Note podcast, Colter revealed that not only is he open to a comeback, but active “conversations” are already happening behind the scenes.

From “No” to “Unfinished Business”

In the years following the end of Luke Cage Season 2, Colter was famously hesitant about a return. He often cited a desire to explore new roles and move past the superhero genre. However, something has clearly shifted in the Marvel landscape—and in Colter’s own perspective.

“I’ve had conversations… and I’ll leave it at that,” Colter teased during the interview. “Before, I was… ‘no.’ Because when it wrapped… y’know I loved playing Luke Cage but I love acting and doing different things. So I just was like, ‘I’ll do something else.'”

What changed? According to Colter, it’s a realization that his version of Carl Lucas still has a story to tell.

“I think to myself, ‘I have some unfinished business there,'” he admitted. “I talked to Cheo [Hodari Coker] about it, he was the creator and showrunner… and now I’ve reached the point where I’m like, ‘I have some unfinished business.'”

The “Born Again” Catalyst

It isn’t hard to see why the timing feels right. The MCU is currently leaning heavily into its “street-level” roots. With Daredevil: Born Again serving as the flagship for this gritty revival, the door has been kicked wide open for the rest of The Defenders.

We already know that Charlie Cox is back in full force, and reports have confirmed that Krysten Ritter has filmed scenes as Jessica Jones for the second season of Born Again. For Colter, seeing his former co-stars suit up again was a wake-up call.

“I think Daredevil’s back so, c’mon… Jessica’s back,” Colter remarked, acknowledging that the pieces of the puzzle are finally coming back together.

“Faster Than We Think”

Perhaps the most electrifying part of Colter’s update was his hint at the timeline. Fans are used to “Marvel Time,” where projects can take years to move from rumor to reality. But Colter suggests this might be an exception.

“I’d say we’re in a better position to come into fruition faster than we think, so we’ll see,” he teased. “I was giving no one hope before, I am giving hope at least.”

With Daredevil: Born Again having already greenlit a third season—set to begin filming later this year—the window for a Luke Cage cameo or a supporting arc has never been wider. Whether he appears as the Mayor of Harlem or returns to his “Hero for Hire” roots alongside a potentially returning Iron Fist, the infrastructure for his return is already built.

Why We Need Luke Cage Now

The original Luke Cage series was praised for its cultural impact, its incredible soundtrack, and its grounded look at community and justice. In a 2026 MCU that is exploring more mature, “Marvel Spotlight” style storytelling (like Echo and Daredevil), the return of Mike Colter offers a chance to resolve the cliffhanger of Season 2, where Cage took over as the “Sheriff” of Harlem’s Paradise.

Leaving Luke in that morally grey position has always felt like a loose thread in the tapestry of the Defenders. If Colter’s “unfinished business” involves bringing Cage back into the light as a true hero of the people, fans are more than ready to watch.

Final Thoughts

Mike Colter’s shift from a definitive “no” to a hopeful “yes” is the biggest news for Defenders fans in years. While we wait for an official announcement from Kevin Feige or Disney+, one thing is certain: the unbreakable man is ready to break back into the MCU.
