The search for the face of one of PlayStation’s most iconic (and angriest) legends has ended. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have announced that Ryan Hurst will play Kratos in the upcoming live-action God of War series for Prime Video.

The casting news has sent shockwaves through the gaming community, not just because of Hurst’s impressive physical presence, but because he is already a veteran of the franchise. For those who spent 2022 trekking through the Nine Realms, you’ll recognize Hurst as the voice and motion-capture actor behind Thor in God of War Ragnarök. Now, he’s swapping the Mjölnir for the Leviathan Axe to play the very man he once hunted.

A Familiar Face for a New Journey

While names like Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa were frequently thrown around in fan-casts, the decision to go with Hurst brings a deep, intrinsic understanding of the source material. Beyond his work in the games, Hurst is a powerhouse of the small screen, having turned in unforgettable performances as Opie in Sons of Anarchy and the menacing Beta in The Walking Dead.

Ryan Hurst God of War Kratos

Standing at a towering 6’4″ with a natural baritone that can shake a room, Hurst embodies the “Ghost of Sparta” with ease. Amazon’s early side-by-side promotional imagery suggests they are leaning into the weathered, stoic look of the Norse-era Kratos—a version of the character that requires as much emotional depth as it does raw strength.

The Story: A Father, A Son, and A Better Way

The series is set to skip the blood-soaked Greek origins of Kratos’ youth, instead focusing on the critically acclaimed 2018 reboot. The story picks up with Kratos living in self-imposed exile in the realm of Midgard. Following the death of his wife, Faye, he and his young son, Atreus, embark on a perilous journey to the highest peak in the realms to spread her ashes.

The heart of the show will be the complex dynamic between a father who knows too much about war and a son who knows too little. As the official description puts it:

“Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

A Creative Reset and a “Bloody” Future

The path to production hasn’t been without its obstacles. The project underwent a significant creative reset late last year when original showrunner Rafe Judkins departed. Stepping in to steer the ship is legendary sci-fi veteran Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, For All Mankind).

With Moore at the helm and Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) set to direct the first two episodes, the series is positioning itself as a prestige drama. Amazon is clearly confident in this new direction, having already issued a two-season order. Pre-production is currently in full swing in Vancouver, promising a long and—given the source material—undoubtedly bloody saga.

The Guardians of Midgard

The production is a massive collaboration between industry titans, including:

Amazon MGM Studios & Sony Pictures Television

PlayStation Productions & Tall Ship Productions

Executive Producers: Longtime game director Cory Barlog, Sony’s Hermen Hulst, and Maril Davis.

Fans are also keeping an ear out for the soundtrack. Game composer Bear McCreary has previously expressed interest in joining the TV series, and bringing his epic, Nordic-inspired themes to live-action would be the ultimate “chef’s kiss” for the production.

While we still don’t have a confirmed release date, the casting of Ryan Hurst proves that Amazon is ready to treat Kratos with the reverence he deserves.
