Shawn Levy Explains How ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ United Marvel’s Greatest Heroes (and Anti-Heroes)

by Jake Laycock

Imagine a world where your favorite Marvel characters from different universes collide in an epic, fourth-wall-breaking adventure. Now stop imagining, because “Deadpool & Wolverine” has made that a reality!

SPOILER ALERTS FROM HERE ON

It all began with a flurry of texts – the 21st century equivalent of the Avengers’ call to assemble. Director Shawn Levy and the Merc with a Mouth himself, Ryan Reynolds, embarked on a quest worthy of the Infinity Gauntlet: convincing a pantheon of Marvel legends to don their spandex once more.

The roster reads like a comic book fan’s fever dream: Chris Evans as the Human Torch, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, and even Channing Tatum as the long-awaited Gambit. It’s like someone opened a portal to the early 2000s and pulled out the best of Marvel’s pre-MCU era!

“With pretty much no exceptions, every surprise casting in this movie came down to Ryan or I reaching out to the actor before lawyers and before agents [were involved],” Levy revealed, channeling his inner Nick Fury. “It literally was us asking and invariably people saying ‘yes.'”

The result? A box office Blitzkrieg that would make Thanos jealous. After two weekends, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has amassed a Stark-level fortune of $824 million, making it the second-biggest movie of 2024. It’s poised to join the exclusive billion-dollar club, a feat only one other R-rated film (2019’s “Joker”) has achieved.

But wait, there’s more! Levy spilled some Infinity Stones-level secrets about the production:

  1. Blade’s return was Reynolds’ brainchild, aiming to give the daywalker the sendoff he deserved.
  2. Channing Tatum’s Gambit speaks in an accent so thick, even the script couldn’t decipher it. Cooyain-zwah, anyone?
  3. The Cavillerine (yes, that’s Henry Cavill as a Wolverine variant) joined faster than Quicksilver on espresso.
  4. Despite rampant rumors, Taylor Swift did NOT make a cameo. (Sorry, Swifties!)
  5. Easter eggs galore! Keep your eyes peeled for a classic Thor helmet, Tony Stark memorabilia, and even a nod to “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”

Levy also hinted at potential future Marvel projects, leaving us more excited than Peter Parker on a field trip to Stark Industries. You can read more of the interview with Varity here:

Q: How did you assemble this Avengers-level team of Fox-era Marvel stars?

A: “With pretty much no exceptions, every surprise casting in this movie came down to Ryan or I reaching out to the actor before lawyers and before agents [were involved],” Levy revealed, channeling his inner Nick Fury. “It literally was us asking and invariably people saying ‘yes.'”

Q: How did the team convince Wesley Snipes to return as Blade?

A: “Wesley’s return as Blade was a very early idea of Ryan’s,” Levy explained. “We wanted to explore themes of legacy, characters and their endings. Ryan had said, ‘Blade never really got that moment, and I think people don’t even realize how much they miss Wesley Snipes as Blade until they see him. Let’s give them that feeling.'”

Q: What’s the story behind Channing Tatum’s hilariously indecipherable Gambit accent?

A: “We had scripted a lot of those borderline nonsensical lines,” Levy chuckled. “But then Channing added a lot of Cajun and French flavor. To this day, there are some things he says — like when he sees Hugh drinking his liquor and he throws a charged-up card his way, he says something that sounds a lot like cooyain-zwah — where I don’t fucking know the words.”

Q: Was there any truth to the Taylor Swift cameo rumors?

A: “That was one of the loudest rumors that came out of nowhere. It was never true,” Levy confirmed, crushing Swifties’ dreams faster than Thanos with the Reality Stone.

Q: How quickly did Henry Cavill agree to appear as a Wolverine variant?

A: “He said ‘yes’ right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful,” Levy grinned. “It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work, and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he’s appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero.”

Q: Any favorite Easter eggs hidden in the film?

A: Levy’s eyes lit up like Iron Man’s repulsors: “There is a super classic old-school Thor helmet in the foreground of a void shot that’s from the ’70s or ’80s. There’s a picture of Tony Stark in Happy Hogan’s office… Obviously, the proof that Tony Stark has a heart was one of the most thrilling shots I’ve ever gotten to do in my career because that’s a part of genre history.”

Q: Are you open to directing another Marvel movie?

A: “I don’t know what form my Marvel future will take, but I’m very confident Marvel and I aren’t done with each other,” Levy teased, leaving us more excited than Spider-Man with a new suit upgrade.

There you have it, fellow geeks! “Deadpool & Wolverine” isn’t just a movie – it’s a multiversal celebration of Marvel’s legacy that’ll have you geeking out harder than Bruce Banner in a gamma ray lab! With box office numbers that would make Tony Stark blush ($824 million and counting), this R-rated romp is set to join the billion-dollar club faster than Quicksilver on a caffeine binge.

So grab your chimichangas, polish your adamantium claws, and get ready for the most meta Marvel adventure yet! Excelsior!
