The Resurrection of a Legend
The journey to the Maul – Shadow Lord series actually began on the junk planet of Lotho Minor. After being bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Maul survived for over a decade through sheer, concentrated hatred and the dark side of the Force. He was eventually recovered by his brother, Savage Opress, and restored to sanity by the dark magick of his mother, the Nightsister Mother Talzin. This restoration changed Maul from a silent assassin into a philosophical, vengeful mastermind. He was no longer a pawn of Darth Sidious but a rival, eventually building the Shadow Collective—a criminal alliance that briefly allowed him to conquer the warrior world of Mandalore.
His reign was cut short by the double-tap of a duel with his former master and the subsequent Siege of Mandalore. During the final days of the Clone Wars, Maul was captured by Ahsoka Tano, only to escape into the chaos of Order 66. This is where the new series picks up. Set approximately a year after the fall of the Republic in 17 BBY, the show finds Maul as a man without a country, an empire, or an apprentice. He has dropped the “Darth” title, viewing himself as something beyond the Sith or the Jedi, and is now focused on rebuilding his power in the early, lawless days of the Imperial era.

Welcome to the Crater City of Janix
The core of the new series takes place on Janix, a neon-soaked planet that is described by executive producer Matt Michnovetz as a cross between Gotham City and Metropolis. Janix features a massive city built inside a crater, divided into distinct layers that hide various criminal syndicates. Unlike most of the galaxy, Janix has thus far avoided the heavy hand of the Empire, maintaining a fragile peace through a democratic government that has a quiet “accord” with local mobsters. This makes it the perfect fertile ground for Maul to begin planting the seeds of what will eventually become Crimson Dawn.
The planet Janix is not just a backdrop but a character in its own right, designed to reflect the pulpy, noir tone of the show. Fans can expect a more serialized, fast-paced story than the anthology style seen in The Bad Batch or Tales of the Empire. The writers have leaned into the “noir detective” aesthetic, pitting Maul’s shadowy operations against a local law enforcement agency that is desperate to keep the peace. The series will explore the grit of the Star Wars underworld in a way that pays homage to the classic film serials that originally inspired George Lucas.
A New Master and a Reluctant Apprentice
One of the most exciting aspects of the Maul – Shadow Lord series is the introduction of Devon Izara, a Twi’lek Jedi Padawan voiced by Gideon Adlon. Devon is a survivor of the Great Jedi Purge who is disillusioned with the Order that failed her. Maul sees in her a reflection of his own abandonment and attempts to recruit her as his apprentice. This dynamic is a fascinating callback to unused concepts George Lucas had for his own sequel trilogy, which involved Maul training a Twi’lek apprentice named Darth Talon.
While Maul’s intentions are undoubtedly malicious, he presents himself to Devon as a mentor who can help her “live rather than just survive” in a galaxy that wants her dead. This relationship promises to be the emotional core of the series, testing whether a light-side survivor can withstand the charisma and trauma-informed manipulation of a former Sith. Alongside Devon, we will meet her former Master, the Vurk Jedi Eeko-Dio Daki, voiced by Dennis Haysbert, whose presence serves as a haunting reminder of the life she lost.
The Law and the Inquisitors
While Maul is building his empire, he faces opposition from both the local police and the creeping reach of the Empire. Wagner Moura voices Captain Brander Lawson, a former bounty hunter turned police detective who is described as a “Jim Gordon” figure within the corrupt hierarchy of Janix. Lawson is joined by his droid partner, Two-Boots, voiced by the incomparable Richard Ayoade. This duo provides the “cop story” perspective, investigating the mysterious rise in syndicate violence that trails behind Maul’s arrival.
However, the local police are the least of Maul’s worries. The series marks the return of Marrok, the mysterious Inquisitor voiced by A.J. LoCascio. As the Empire begins to assert dominance over the Janix sector, the Inquisitors arrive to hunt down the Force-sensitives hiding within the city. This sets up a three-way collision between the criminal underground, the local law, and the Imperial war machine. With Sam Witwer returning to provide his most nuanced vocal performance yet, the series is poised to be the definitive look at Maul’s transition from a shattered survivor to the “Godfather” of the Star Wars underworld.
Will the Shadow Lord Finally Succeed?
As we count down the days to the premiere, the big question remains: can Maul ever truly escape the cycle of revenge that has defined his life? We know where his story eventually ends on the sands of Tatooine, but the years in between are a dark mystery that Shadow Lord is finally ready to reveal. The premiere on April 6 will kick off with two episodes, followed by a weekly release schedule leading up to a massive finale on Star Wars Day, May 4.
Do you think Devon Izara is destined to become a true villain, or will she be the one to finally outsmart Maul? And more importantly, which legacy character are you hoping makes a surprise cameo on the streets of Janix? Let us know your wildest theories in the comments below!
