Director Shawn Levy has given fans another tantalizing glimpse into his upcoming film, Star Wars: Starfighter.
A new production photo features stars Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray on what appears to be a sci-fi boat in the middle of a vast body of water. Filming is currently taking place off the coast of Sardinia, Italy, in the Mediterranean Sea. The photo shows Gosling with a bruised cheek, wearing a loose-fitting shirt reminiscent of Han Solo, while Gray sports a similar scruffy look. The two look the parts of an uncle and nephew, a relationship that has been hinted at in the film’s early details.

The image has sparked a lot of fan speculation, with many wondering which classic Star Wars water planet the duo is on.
A New Planet and a New Story
While planets like Kamino or Naboo have been suggested, fans are also speculating that the setting could be a world from Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, a 2002 video game. The aquatic world of Maramere, with its gills-sporting residents, has not yet been brought into the Disney canon, but its appearance here would be a welcome nod to the “Legends” lore. Ultimately, Levy has confirmed the film is not a prequel or sequel, but rather a standalone adventure “set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.” The film’s script was handled by Jonathan Tropper, who previously worked with Levy on The Adam Project.

A Stellar Cast and Crew
The film has an impressive cast lined up, with Matt Smith set to play the main villain alongside Mia Goth. The cast also includes Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, and Jamael Westman. The combination of star power and fresh talent promises a new and exciting direction for the Star Wars franchise.
This new photo is just the latest from Levy, who also shared a previous set photo of Gosling and Gray on a landspeeder-like vehicle. These small glimpses are a great way to build hype for a film that promises to be a test of whether the Star Wars brand name alone can draw audiences to a completely original story.
