There is something undeniably “shiny” about the way Nintendo is handling its cinematic universe. Following the billion-dollar success of their first outing, the pressure for the sequel to hit lightspeed was immense. Today’s Nintendo Direct proved that they aren’t just aiming for the moon—they’re aiming for the entire Comet Observatory.

The final trailer for the film is a masterclass in building hype. It centers on a surprisingly emotional arc for Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, who is seen launching a desperate, high-stakes plot to rescue his father from the Mario brothers. We see the iconic Princess Peach’s castle literally torn from the soil of the Mushroom Kingdom as Bowser attempts to reclaim his throne, but the narrative tension was quickly matched by the excitement of the new additions to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie cast.

The Glow-Up: Donald Glover is Our Yoshi

The biggest question mark hanging over this production has been the identity of Yoshi. Previous teasers featured a familiar, melodic voice that had fans debating everyone from Justice Smith to Dev Patel. Chris Meledandri finally put those theories to rest by announcing Donald Glover as the voice of Mario’s loyal companion.

Glover is a perfect fit for the vibe Nintendo is cultivating. Known for his incredible range in Community, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and his Grammy-winning music career, Glover brings a soulful, charismatic energy to a character that has traditionally been limited to “mlem” sounds and pops. Meledandri hinted that this version of Yoshi will be more than just a mount; he is a key emotional pillar for Mario as he navigates the dangers of deep space. Seeing Glover’s name attached to such a beloved mascot confirms that Nintendo is looking for actors who can bring genuine personality to these pixel-perfect icons.

A Villainous Return: Luis Guzmán Steps into the Role of Wart

While Bowser remains the primary antagonist, the final trailer shocked long-time fans by introducing a deep-cut villain from the NES era. Luis Guzmán has been cast as Wart, the king of the subconscious realm of Subcon. Guzmán, a veteran actor known for his recent scene-stealing work in Wednesday, brings a gruff, slightly comedic gravitas to the giant frog-king.

Wart’s inclusion is a significant nod to the history of the franchise, specifically Super Mario Bros. 2. Seeing him “enter orbit” suggests that the film is expanding the lore beyond just the Galaxy games, weaving together different eras of Nintendo history. Although Guzmán’s Wart only receives a few seconds of screentime in the new trailer, his presence signals a much larger threat lurking in the dark corners of the universe that Mario and Luigi might not be prepared for.

Issa Rae Reigns Supreme as the Honey Queen

The casting news didn’t stop with the villains and sidekicks. The vibrant, buzzing world of the Honey Hive Galaxy is also getting its ruler. Issa Rae has joined the cast as the Honey Queen, the massive, benevolent monarch of the bees. Rae has a unique ability to play characters that feel both regal and relatable, which is exactly the energy needed for the Honey Queen’s “larger-than-life” persona.

Her inclusion highlights the film’s commitment to capturing the specific magic of the Super Mario Galaxy level design. The Honey Hive Galaxy is one of the most nostalgic locations for fans of the Wii original, and having an actress of Rae’s caliber bringing the Queen to life ensures that these celestial stops feel populated and important. It also opens the door for some potentially hilarious interactions between her and the Mario brothers as they navigate her sticky kingdom.

The 40th Anniversary Centerpiece

The legendary Shigeru Miyamoto himself appeared during the Direct to emphasize the importance of this release. He noted that since September of last year, Nintendo has been rolling out initiatives for the Super Mario Brothers 40th anniversary, but this film is intended to be the “centerpiece” of that celebration.

The film boasts an incredible ensemble that includes Brie Larson as the ethereal Rosalina and the returning core cast from the first film. However, the mystery isn’t entirely solved. The trailer featured a brief glimpse of a pilot that many fans are already convinced is Fox McCloud, suggesting that the “Nintendo Cinematic Universe” might be expanding even faster than we thought. With rumors of a Star Fox cameo and a classic NES icon appearance still swirling, the April 1, 2026, release date can’t come soon enough.

Is This the Ultimate Nintendo Roster?

The final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has successfully turned a simple sequel into a massive cultural event. By bringing in powerhouse talent like Donald Glover, Luis Guzmán, and Issa Rae, Nintendo is proving that they aren’t afraid to take big swings with their casting choices.

What do you think of Donald Glover as the voice of Yoshi? Is he the perfect fit for the green dino, or were you hoping for someone else? And more importantly, do you think that mystery pilot is actually Fox McCloud? Drop your theories in the comments and let’s talk about that Wart reveal!
