‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 is Officially Happening with Women’s Team Twist, Sudeikis Returns

by Jake Laycock

In a move that has fans worldwide cheering from their seats, Apple TV+ has officially announced what many hoped for but few dared BELIEVE: Ted Lasso is returning for a fourth season. The Emmy-winning phenomenon will see Jason Sudeikis back in his signature mustache and tracksuit – but this time, he’s coaching a women’s team.

A New Chapter Begins

“As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap,’ in season four, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be,” Sudeikis revealed in his first public statement about the new season, offering fans a tantalizing glimpse into the show’s fresh direction.

The renewal fulfills what many viewers suspected from the Season 3 finale’s breadcrumbs: Rebecca and Keeley’s impulsive decision to launch an AFC Richmond women’s team wasn’t just a throwaway moment – it was laying groundwork for the next evolution of the beloved series. Sudeikis himself confirmed on The New Heights podcast Friday that Ted will indeed be coaching a women’s team in the upcoming season.

In a significant departure from previous seasons, production will kick off in Kansas (likely Kansas City) – marking the first time the show will actually film in Sudeikis’s home state rather than using California as a stand-in. The premiere episode will capture Ted in his homeland before the action returns to the familiar grounds of the UK.

The Richmond Family Reunion

Behind the scenes, deals have been strategically falling into place for months. Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Brett Goldstein (Roy), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie) were locked in back in August, ensuring the core management team remains intact.

Juno Temple, whose portrayal of PR dynamo Keeley Jones earned critical acclaim, is currently in negotiations to return, with sources indicating that despite scheduling conflicts, an agreement appears likely.

Questions remain about the status of fan-favorites like Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard) and Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt). While Dunster has committed to a new HBO comedy series (also from Ted Lasso executive producer Bill Lawrence), reports suggest he could still appear in a limited capacity. Meanwhile, Nick Mohammed teased a possible return as the reformed villain Nate back in January.

The writers’ room has been quietly buzzing for months, led by co-showrunners Sudeikis and newcomer Jack Burditt, a comedy veteran whose recent credits include Modern Family, 30 Rock, and Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. Many familiar Ted Lasso writing talents have reassembled, including Goldstein and Hunt, who are pulling double duty as actors and executive producers.

Believing Again

Ted Lasso has been nothing short of a juggernaut, inspiring a passionate fanbase all over the world, and delivering endless joy and laughter, all while spreading kindness, compassion and unwavering belief,” declared Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+.

This renewal is particularly meaningful considering Sudeikis had originally mapped the show as a three-season arc. Despite completing his vision with Season 3’s emotional finale (aptly titled “So Long, Farewell”), the door was deliberately left ajar for future stories – much to the relief of the show’s global audience.

“If ever there was a show the world needed more of right now, it would be Ted Lasso,” said Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group. “We — along with countless fans around the globe — have been rooting for another season, and it is an incredible feeling to be able to say, ‘Yes, it’s happening!'”

With production targeted to begin in July and casting for new characters already underway, AFC Richmond’s next chapter promises to bring fresh energy while maintaining the heart and humor that transformed a simple comedy about an American football coach in England into a cultural phenomenon that reminded the world about the power of believing.
