Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Episode 6 of “Agatha All Along” on Disney+
“It feels like I’m breaking all the rules, but in the best way possible,” Joe Locke grins, his eyes sparkling with excitement. After nearly two years of secrecy, the young star can finally spill the beans on his role in Marvel’s latest hit series, “Agatha All Along.”
The Big Reveal
Episode 6 dropped a bombshell on fans: Locke’s character, introduced as the mysterious “Teen,” is none other than Billy Maximoff – son of the Scarlet Witch herself. This revelation sent shockwaves through the Marvel fandom, confirming long-held suspicions and igniting a firestorm of theories.
“I’m thrilled for Joe,” beams Jac Schaeffer, the show’s creator and showrunner. “He’s handled the secrecy like a pro. Now he can finally talk about the incredible work he’s put into bringing Billy to life.”
A Secret Identity
Keeping Billy’s true identity under wraps was no easy feat. Schaeffer employed a clever plot device – a magical “sigil” – to mask Billy not just from other characters, but from the audience as well.
Locke chuckles, recalling the countless times he had to deflect fan theories. “After the tenth time someone said, ‘You’re playing Billy Maximoff,’ and I had to play dumb – it gets easier. But man, was it tough!”
Billy’s Origin Story: A Fresh Take
Episode 6, “Familiar By Thy Side,” finally reveals Billy’s backstory – with a twist. We meet 13-year-old William Kaplan celebrating his bar mitzvah in New Jersey. Tragedy strikes when a car accident claims William’s life, but in a cosmic twist of fate, Billy Maximoff’s soul inhabits the boy’s body.
This reimagining simplifies Billy’s notoriously complex comic book origins. Schaeffer admits, “When I first read about Billy’s comic book backstory, I was like, ‘What? Say that again?’ We needed something more accessible.”
Bringing Billy to Life
Locke knew most of Billy’s backstory even before landing the role. His audition scenes came straight from this pivotal episode, including Billy’s confrontation with Agatha that closes out “Familiar By Thy Side.”
“That final scene with Agatha? That’s what got me the job,” Locke reveals. “After nailing it, I thought, ‘Okay, maybe I’ve got a shot at this!'”
A Superhero for All
Billy Maximoff isn’t just another caped crusader. As one of Marvel’s few Jewish and LGBTQ+ superheroes, his representation matters. The production team went to great lengths to portray Billy’s Judaism authentically, including Locke’s intensive preparation for the bar mitzvah scene.
“I worked with Rabbi Alexandria Shuval-Weiner for four months,” Locke explains. “Learning to sing the Haftorah in Hebrew with an American accent? Not easy for a British guy!”
What’s Next for Billy?
With Billy’s identity now revealed, fans are buzzing about what’s to come. Will we see the return of his twin, Tommy? Is the villainous Mephisto lurking in the shadows?
Schaeffer keeps her cards close to her chest. “We’re just over halfway through our story,” she teases. “There’s still plenty of surprises in store.”
One thing’s certain: Billy Maximoff’s journey is far from over, and “Agatha All Along” promises to keep viewers spellbound until the very end.
