In the high-stakes game of Hollywood box office records, a new titan has officially claimed the throne. In a historic shift for the industry, Zoe Saldaña has officially overtaken Scarlett Johansson to become the highest-grossing actor of all time.

For years, the top spot was a battleground dominated by the stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Saldaña’s unique ability to lead multiple billion-dollar franchises—most notably James Cameron’s Avatar—has finally pushed her into the lead.

The Multi-Billion Dollar Gap

According to recent data from The Numbers, Saldaña’s cumulative global box office gross has climbed to nearly $17 billion. Meanwhile, former frontrunner Scarlett Johansson is trailing closely behind with a career total of just under $16.5 billion.

Currently, a gap of approximately $423 million separates these two A-listers. While that may seem like a bridgeable distance in Hollywood terms, the momentum is firmly in Saldaña’s corner. With the latest installment of the Avatar saga still drawing crowds to theaters, that lead is expected to widen significantly in the coming weeks.

The ‘Avatar’ Effect

The primary catalyst for this record-breaking feat is, unsurprisingly, James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. As of early 2026, the third film in the franchise has already grossed:

  • $342 million domestically
  • $888 million internationally
  • $1.2 billion and climbing globally

Saldaña, who stars as Neytiri, remains the only actor in history to appear in four of the highest-grossing films ever made (Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame). While the original 2009 Avatar remains the undisputed king of the box office (not adjusted for inflation), Fire and Ash is proving that the world’s appetite for Pandora is far from satiated.

A Tale of Two Blockbusters

While Saldaña has been riding the blue wave of Avatar, Scarlett Johansson hasn’t been sitting idle. In July 2025, she led the charge in Jurassic World Rebirth.

The film was a definitive hit, snagging $869 million at the global box office. Under almost any other circumstances, an $800M+ gross would be the highlight of an actor’s year. However, when measured against the “enormous” scale of the Avatar franchise, it fell just shy—roughly $330 million short—of the current Fire and Ash take-home.

Can “ScarJo” Reclaim the Throne?

The battle for the #1 spot is far from over. Both actresses have packed schedules for the next two years, but the industry is keeping a close eye on one specific project that could put Johansson back on top: The Batman Part II.

Currently slated for a 2027 release, the sequel to Matt Reeves’ gritty DC epic is expected to be a massive commercial powerhouse. If the film performs at the level many analysts expect, we could see these two icons trading the lead once again.

“No matter the numbers, one thing’s for sure: both of these performers are some of the best the industry has to offer.”

The Legacy of the MCU

It is worth noting that both women built much of their record-breaking foundations within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether it was Saldaña’s Gamora or Johansson’s Black Widow, their contributions to the highest-grossing film franchise in history paved the way for this moment.

Today, they aren’t just “Marvel stars”—they are the two most bankable names in cinematic history, proving that female-led and female-driven performances are the ultimate engine of the global box office.
