Disney’s year-end holiday tentpole achieved the feat faster than any Hollywood animated film in history, as well as any PG-rated film.

As Hollywood frets over theatrical’s future amid proposed Netflix-Warner Bros. merger concerns, the stunning performance of Disney’s critical and audience darling Zootopia 2 proves that moviegoers will turn out for the right reasons.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ sequel zoomed past the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office on Friday after just 17 days in release. It’s only the second film of 2025 to achieve that milestone, following fellow Disney blockbuster Lilo & Stitch. Moreover, it accomplished this in record time—the fastest among all Hollywood animated releases and all PG-rated films.

The Numbers Tell an Incredible Story

The sequel, continuing the adventures of optimistic rabbit Judy Hopps and sly fox Nick Wilde, finished Thursday with a global haul of $986.1 million, including $232.7 million domestically and $753.4 million overseas. By Friday, it had decisively crossed the billion-dollar threshold.

This marks the first back-to-back billion-dollar releases for Walt Disney Animation Studios, following last year’s Moana 2. The studio now counts five billion-dollar titles since 2013 among the Frozen, Moana, and Zootopia franchises—cementing its position as a theatrical powerhouse.

“Everyone at Disney Animation put their heart, soul and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination, and incredible thoughtfulness,” said Jared Bush, chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios. “This milestone means the world to us, because more than anything, it means audiences are coming to theaters for a shared experience of watching this movie on the big screen, everyone together, from all walks of life around the world—and that is a Zootopia dream come true.”

Record-Breaking Opening Weekend

Zootopia 2 opened to a record-smashing $559.5 million over the five-day Thanksgiving corridor, claiming multiple impressive records:

  • Highest global animated opening of all time
  • Highest global debut of 2025
  • Top global opening for any animated film in Disney history

The Thanksgiving tentpole has also reignited interest in the franchise, driving record viewership of 2016’s Zootopia, which topped out at $1.03 billion during its theatrical run. That film’s enduring popularity laid the groundwork for this sequel’s explosive success.

More Room to Grow

Zootopia 2 is destined to fly far higher, thanks to the upcoming Christmas holidays when families are searching for entertainment options. The market can sustain three to four event pictures during the final two weeks of the year, and Zootopia 2 is positioned to dominate its competitive landscape.

The biggest name on the marquee competing for holiday audiences is Avatar: Fire and Ash, which arrives later in the season. However, Zootopia 2’s early momentum and broad family appeal suggest it has plenty of runway left.

What This Means for Theatrical Exhibition

In an era of streaming dominance and industry consolidation anxiety, Zootopia 2’s performance delivers a crucial message: theatrical exhibition remains viable for films that capture the cultural zeitgeist. The sequel’s success demonstrates that audiences still value the communal experience of watching beloved characters on the big screen, especially when the content resonates across generations and demographics.

For Disney, this represents vindication of their dual strategy—investing heavily in both theatrical tentpoles and streaming content. While Disney+ remains an important distribution channel, Zootopia 2 proves that nothing replaces the revenue potential and cultural impact of a massive theatrical hit.

As the film continues its historic run through the holiday season, one thing is clear: the world of Zootopia has captured hearts worldwide, and audiences are voting with their wallets to keep the magic alive on the big screen.
