For years, the internet has collectively been a circus of anticipation, with fans of Hollow Knight dutifully “putting on the clown makeup” every time a new game showcase rolled around. The object of their hopeful, meme-fueled despair? The long-awaited sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong.

But the wait is officially over. The memes can be retired. Team Cherry has finally, gloriously, and without warning, delivered what the world has been waiting for: a release date.

Hollow Knight: Silksong will launch on September 4, 2025!

The news dropped today with a brand-new, nearly two-minute trailer that sent a collective shiver of excitement through the gaming community. It’s the most we’ve seen in years, and it was worth every second of the excruciating wait.

What We Learned From the New Trailer

The trailer gave us a breathtaking look at what’s in store for Hornet, the graceful, needle-wielding protagonist. We see her traversing a variety of stunning new locales that expand on the dark, beautiful world of Hallownest. The footage teases us with:

  • Vast New Worlds: Hornet explores a diverse range of environments, from dreary graveyards and murky swamps to a bustling new city teeming with life.
  • A Roster of New Characters: We get glimpses of new insectoid NPCs, each with unique designs and personalities, suggesting a world even more rich and layered than the first.
  • An Explosion of Enemies: The trailer proudly boasts “over 200 new enemies” and “over 40 new bosses.” It looks like Hornet will have her work cut out for her, with new adversaries that are as imaginative as they are menacing.
  • New Gameplay Mechanics: The footage includes an intense chase sequence reminiscent of the high-octane escapes from games like Ori and the Blind Forest, hinting at a new level of platforming intensity.

A Long and Winding Road

First announced back in 2019, Silksong‘s development has been a masterclass in patience (or a test of sanity, depending on who you ask). The game was originally confirmed for PC and Nintendo Switch but later expanded to include Xbox (and Game Pass), PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, ensuring that no one is left behind.

The silence from Team Cherry over the years only fueled the fan community’s fervor, turning every gaming event into a desperate search for a glimpse of Silksong. From the Xbox Bethesda Showcase in 2022 to the recent playable demo at Gamescom, every little tease became a massive event. Geoff Keighley himself leaned into the hype, teasing new footage at Gamescom Opening Night Live, adding to the frenzy.

Now, all the theorizing, the hopeful posts, and yes, the chocolate cake recipes are finally paying off. The sequel to one of the most beloved indie games of all time is no longer a myth. It’s a reality.

Congrats to the dedicated Hollow Knight community. You can finally put away the clown makeup. Silksong is no longer a dream; it’s Silksoon.
