As we settle into the new year, Nintendo has officially fired the starting pistol for 2026. While the Nintendo Switch 2 has been flying off shelves since its debut last June, the focus for many remains on its undisputed champion: Mario Kart World.
Late yesterday, January 21, 2026, Nintendo dropped Update 1.5.0. This marks the first software update of the year for the flagship racer, following the final “maintenance” patch of 2025 (Version 1.4.1) released back in mid-December. While fans are still hungry for the first massive DLC expansion, this update brings some much-needed quality-of-life improvements and a brand-new way to experience the game’s most intense mode.
Team Spirit Comes to the Knockout Tour
The headline feature of Version 1.5.0 is the evolution of the Knockout Tour. For the uninitiated, Knockout Tour is the “battle royale” style mode that defines Mario Kart World. Up until now, this high-stakes gauntlet—where the bottom four racers are eliminated at every checkpoint—was a strictly “every racer for themselves” affair.

With Update 1.5.0, Nintendo has officially added team races to Knockout Tour when playing in a private room. Whether you are racing via Online Play or sitting on a couch with friends using Wireless Play, you can now group up to take on the world. This adds a layer of strategy that the mode was previously lacking; teammates can now coordinate items, sacrifice their own positioning to block rivals, and ensure that their group makes it through the brutal elimination checkpoints together.
Cześć! Polish Language Support Arrives
In a move that signals Nintendo’s continued commitment to global accessibility, Mario Kart World has officially added Polish language support. While it might seem like a minor footnote for English-speaking players, this is a significant step for the Central European gaming community.
Players can easily toggle this in the “Language” setting within the Switch 2 System Menu. It’s a welcome addition that ensures the “World” in Mario Kart World feels more inclusive than ever.
The End of the “Choco Mountain Crash”
Every major game has its weird, specific bugs, and for the last month, the Mario Kart World community has been plagued by a very strange one involving a certain magikoopa.
If you were playing as Kamek on the Choco Mountain course, there was a statistically significant chance that the game would simply… end. Whether it was a memory leak or a specific interaction with Kamek’s magic effects on that particular terrain, the “Choco Mountain Crash” became a meme within the competitive community.
We can happily report that Version 1.5.0 has fixed the Kamek issue. You can now zoom through those chocolate caves as our favorite blue-robed wizard without fear of your console giving up the ghost. Additionally, Nintendo addressed a bug where player ratings were displaying incorrectly when joining “Everyone” rooms in Online Play.

The 2026 Roadmap: What’s Next for Switch 2?
While Update 1.5.0 is a solid “maintenance” patch, the elephant in the room remains: When is the first major content drop?
Since June 2025, Nintendo has averaged about one minor update per month. If this cadence holds, we should see another update in late February or early March. However, industry insiders suggest that a February Nintendo Direct is imminent. With the Switch 2 entering its first full calendar year, rumors are swirling that the first Mario Kart World “Expansion Pass” could be revealed, potentially bringing classic tracks from the Wii and GameCube eras into the seamless world engine.
In the meantime, Switch 2 owners have plenty to keep them busy. February is looking like a blockbuster month for the console, with the following titles arriving:
Starsand Island (Feb 1)
Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined (Feb 5)
Mario Tennis Fever (Feb 12)
Resident Evil Requiem (Feb 27)
Nintendo Is Listening
Update 1.5.0 isn’t going to set the world on fire, but it proves that Nintendo is listening. The addition of team-based play in the Knockout Tour breathes new life into the competitive scene, and the bug fixes ensure that the experience remains as polished as we expect from the Big N.
If you haven’t checked your console today, make sure to trigger the download so you’re ready for the next community race night!
