Mark Your Calendars: April 12, 2028
Universal has officially updated its release calendar with an “Untitled Illumination/Nintendo event film” set to launch on April 12, 2028. Coming off the back-to-back successes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and its high-flying sequel, the partnership between Nintendo and the studio behind Minions is arguably the strongest force in animation right now.
While the title remains a mystery, the timing fits perfectly into Nintendo’s long-term plan to turn its iconic IPs into a cohesive cinematic universe.
Is the Donkey Kong Spin-off Finally Happening?
The strongest theory for this 2028 slot is the long-gestating Donkey Kong spin-off. After his scene-stealing debut in the first film, DK was noticeably absent from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Many fans interpreted this as a sign that Seth Rogen’s version of the character was being saved for a standalone “Jungle Kingdom” epic.
If this is indeed the DK movie, expect it to dive deep into the Donkey Kong Country lore. We caught glimpses of Diddy and Dixie Kong in cameos, but a solo film could properly introduce the whole family—and perhaps even King K. Rool as the primary antagonist.
There’s also heavy speculation regarding Mayor Pauline. We saw her briefly in New Donk City, but could this film act as a prequel? Some fans are pointing toward the recent Donkey Kong Bananza for clues, suggesting we might meet a younger version of Pauline or explore her early history with the Kongs.
The Nintendo Roadmap: 2027 to 2029
The Nintendo animated movie release date in 2028 is just one piece of a very crowded puzzle. Here is how the next few years are shaping up for Nintendo fans:
- 2027: The live-action The Legend of Zelda film. Directed by Wes Ball and recently finished shooting in the stunning landscapes of New Zealand, this is Nintendo’s attempt at a “high-fantasy” epic.
- 2028: The newly announced Illumination/Nintendo animated project (Likely Donkey Kong).
- 2029: A potential third Mario animated film. Bowser himself, Jack Black, has already hinted that he expects to return for a trilogy capper toward the end of the decade.
The Rumor Mill: What Else is Cooking?
While Donkey Kong seems like a “sure bet,” the Nintendo vault is deep. It’s important to remember that these are unconfirmed rumors, but the buzz surrounding these projects is reaching a fever pitch:
Metroid: Rumors of a moody, atmospheric Metroid film have persisted for years. Could Nintendo pivot to a more sci-fi/action tone for Samus Aran?
Luigi’s Mansion: Following the success of the “spooky” elements in the Mario films, a standalone Luigi’s Mansion horror-comedy for kids is a frequent topic of speculation.
Star Fox: With Illumination’s talent for high-energy action, a space-faring Star Fox adventure would be a natural fit for the studio’s style.
Super Smash Bros.: The ultimate “dream project.” While likely years away, fans believe the coordination between different franchises is leading toward an Avengers-style crossover event.
Which Power-Up is Next?
Nintendo is no longer just a gaming company; it’s a cinematic powerhouse. Whether we’re exploring the stars with Rosalina or the jungle with DK, the future of the big screen looks a lot like our favorite consoles.
Do you think the April 2028 date is definitely for Donkey Kong, or could Nintendo surprise us with a completely different franchise like Kirby or Star Fox? And who would you cast as the voice of King K. Rool? Let us know your theories in the comments!
