The Slip-Up Heard ‘Round the Shire
The potential confirmation came during Elijah Wood’s recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. When the host brought up the daunting task of filling Viggo Mortensen’s boots and specifically mentioned Leo Woodall, Wood didn’t skip a beat.

“Right, that is true,” Wood replied. “Those are tough boots, I can’t imagine, but that’s gonna be great.”
Wood seemed to catch himself almost immediately, quickly pivoting to clarify that the “boots” are indeed tough to fill, but the damage was done. For fans of the franchise, this feels like a massive validation of the Leo Woodall Aragorn casting rumors. Woodall has proven his range recently, shifting from the charming rogue in One Day to a more intense presence in Vladimir, making him a prime candidate for a younger, grittier version of the Ranger known as Strider.
An Eternal Sunshine Reunion in Middle-earth?
The “leaks” didn’t stop there. When Wood was asked about reports that Kate Winslet might join the cast—a move that would reunite the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind co-stars—he gave another tantalizing hint.
“Well, she was announced,” he shared, before adding a cautious, “If Frodo were [to be in it], right.”
The Return of the Fellowship (Sort Of)
While the film focuses on the titular hunt, it’s becoming clear that we’ll see plenty of familiar faces. The Hunt for Gollum is set to feature:
Andy Serkis: Pulling double duty as both the director and the man behind the mo-cap for Gollum.
Sir Ian McKellen: Confirmed to return as Gandalf the Grey.
Elijah Wood: While not “officially” confirmed by the studio, his comments and expressed interest make a Frodo appearance feel like a sure bet.
Wood told The Times that he feels a deep, intrinsic link to Frodo. “I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo either, as long as I’m alive and able,” he admitted. He also shared the fan-first excitement we all feel: “I can also recognize what fun that is going to be — when you are in the cinema and you see the hat turn around and it’s Gandalf.”
Where Does ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ Fit in the Timeline?
For those worried about how a “younger” Aragorn fits with the existing films, the math checks out. The Hunt for Gollum takes place in the 17-year gap between Bilbo’s 111th birthday party and Frodo’s eventual departure from the Shire.
This is the era where Gandalf begins to suspect the true nature of the One Ring and enlists Aragorn to track down the creature who once held it. It’s a period of high-stakes detective work and survival in the wild, perfectly suited for a “Strider” focused story before he becomes the hero we see at the Prancing Pony.
Can Leo Woodall Command the Rangers?
With Andy Serkis at the helm and the legendary Sir Ian McKellen back in the robes, the foundation for this spinoff is rock solid. The real test will be seeing if Leo Woodall can capture that elusive mix of majesty and mud that Mortensen pioneered. If Wood’s “leak” is the real deal, we’re about to see a very different side of the future King of Gondor.
What do you think of Leo Woodall taking on the role of a young Aragorn? Does he have the Ranger “vibe,” or is Viggo Mortensen simply irreplaceable? Let us know your casting theories in the comments below!
