In an emotional and inspiring moment at Sunday’s Emmy Awards, Stephen Graham took home the award for Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his powerful performance in Netflix’s Adolescence. The win, a first for the actor, was just one of several for the show, which he also co-created and wrote. In his acceptance speech, Graham used the platform to deliver a moving message about his background and the power of dreams.

Graham’s win comes after a long and distinguished career in film and television, with roles in critically acclaimed projects like Snatch, Boardwalk Empire, and The Irishman. But for many fans, his role as the complex Eddie Miller in Adolescence is a new career high, and the Emmy win cements his status as one of the best working actors today.

A Humble and Heartfelt Thank You

As he took the stage, Graham, who is of Swedish and Jamaican descent, spoke with heartfelt emotion. “This kind of thing doesn’t normally happen to a kid like me. I’m just a mixed-race kid from a block of flats in a place called Kirkby,” he said, referencing his humble beginnings. His words resonated with the audience, highlighting the journey from a council estate in England to the pinnacle of Hollywood success.

He continued, expressing his deep gratitude for the recognition. “To be here today in front of my peers, and to be acknowledged by you, is the utmost humbling thing I could imagine my life, and it shows you that any dream is possible.” Graham’s speech was a testament to his journey and a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and perseverance.

Graham also used his time at the podium to thank key figures in his life, including his father for introducing him to film and his wife, Hannah Walters, for her unwavering support. “I know that without you I would be dead,” he said, speaking of his wife’s impact with raw honesty. He ended his speech with a simple, unifying message: “Namaste, everyone.”

A Night of Wins for Adolescence

Stephen Graham’s individual win was just part of a dominant night for Adolescence. The series, which he co-created with Jack Thorne, also won awards for Outstanding Limited Series and Limited Series Writing, making for a total of three personal wins for Graham.

In his acceptance speech for the series, Graham spoke about the collaborative environment on set, emphasizing that every member of the production was treated with respect and equality. “Whether or not you are an executive producer from Plan B or you were the fellow that was cleaning the toilets in our Winnebagos, we were all equal,” he said, urging everyone to “just look after each other and give your mate a cuddle or a kiss and tell them you love them.”

The series, which tackles complex issues in a modern British setting, was also recognized for Supporting Limited Series Actor (Owen Cooper), Supporting Limited Series Actress (Erin Doherty), and Limited Series Directing (Philip Barantini), cementing its status as a critical darling and an awards show powerhouse.
