The Visionary Behind the Chaos: Greg Mottola
The biggest news coming out of DC Studios today is that Greg Mottola is the frontrunner to direct the Bane and Deathstroke movie. While Mottola is a legend in the comedy world—having helmed classics like Superbad and Adventureland—he is already a trusted member of the DC Studios family after directing key episodes for the second season of Peacemaker.
James Gunn has a history of tapping directors who can balance razor-sharp wit with intense character drama, and Mottola fits that mold perfectly. While the project is still in its “early days” and formal contracts haven’t been inked, Mottola is currently the favorite to lead this untitled feature.
Production Status: The Script and the Scribe
The foundation for this mercenary-and-mastermind team-up was laid in late 2024 when Matthew Orton, the writer behind Marvel’s Moon Knight, was tapped to pen the screenplay. As of May 2026, the project is described as moving forward through the development pipeline, though an official final script has yet to be delivered to the studio.
This deliberate pace suggests that DC Studios is focused on getting the dynamic between these two titans exactly right before cameras roll. The film is expected to be a standalone theatrical event, potentially mirroring the “villain-first” approach seen in the upcoming Clayface movie, which is set to terrify audiences on October 23, 2026.
Casting the Titans: Who Will Wear the Mask?
While no official casting has been announced, the speculation is reaching a fever pitch.
Bane: This will be the character’s first major big-screen appearance since Tom Hardy’s iconic turn in The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Hardy himself commented in late 2024 that while he’d love to return, he expects a new actor to step into the venom-enhanced role. Long-time fan-favorite Dave Bautista remains a top choice in online circles.
Deathstroke: After Joe Manganiello’s brief but tantalizing tease in the 2017 Justice League post-credits scene, fans have been desperate for a proper Slade Wilson. Whether the studio brings back a familiar face or chooses a fresh mercenary remains one of the biggest mysteries in the DCU.
Mercenaries or Rivals?
With Bane’s tactical brilliance and Deathstroke’s lethal efficiency, this movie has the potential to be the most “tactical” entry in the DCU yet. But the real question is: are they working together, or are they hunting each other?
