SPOILER ALERT: The following recap contains spoilers for the finale of “The Golden Bachelor” Season 2.

Mel Owens’ tumultuous journey on “The Golden Bachelor” Season 2 has finally reached its conclusion—but not before plenty of drama, uncertainty, and one contestant walking away on her own terms. The 66-year-old former NFL linebacker ultimately chose 62-year-old Peg Munson over 60-year-old Cindy Cullers, though the path to that decision was anything but straightforward.

A Season Marked by Controversy

Mel’s season was controversial from the start. Before even entering the Bachelor Mansion, he made comments on a podcast about eliminating women over 60—a statement his contestants didn’t let him forget. That awkward beginning set the tone for a season filled with communication struggles and questions about whether Mel was truly ready for commitment.

Fantasy Suites: A Tale of Two Very Different Dates

Last week’s “Fantasy Suites” episode revealed stark differences in Mel’s connections with his final two women, ending on a cliffhanger that left viewers wondering if he would choose anyone at all.

Peg’s Journey: From Frustration to Connection

Peg’s date with Mel began with frustration. When she tried to gauge where they stood, Mel deflected, answering her questions with one-word responses like “good” before changing the subject to their dune buggy adventure. “He deflects, you know? And I don’t know if it’s because of all of the outside stuff,” Peg said, expressing concern about whether he was emotionally unavailable or simply guarded.

However, their dinner conversation that evening went deeper, and the couple decided to spend the night together in the Fantasy Suite. The next morning brought renewed optimism, with Peg notably calling Mel “emotionally intelligent”—a significant shift from her earlier concerns.

Cindy’s Date: A Breaking Point

Cindy’s experience was far less encouraging. After an already awkward date swimming with stingrays—during which Mel appeared visibly fearful—their dinner conversation grew increasingly tense. When Cindy asked about his feelings for both her and Peg, Mel responded evasively: “It just takes time. I’m gonna make educated choices. I’m not going to take the leap of faith, so to speak.”

Cindy pushed back, pointing out that the entire premise of “The Golden Bachelor” involves taking a leap of faith and ends in a proposal. Mel disagreed, insisting: “I’m smart enough to know that’s not how my life operates.”

The conversation deteriorated as Mel repeatedly avoided discussing whether he was actually ready for marriage. When Cindy suggested that being divorced, he might want to move faster than in his first marriage, Mel didn’t appreciate the observation. She asked directly if there was a “will” to make their relationship work, and the episode ended before viewers heard his answer—or learned whether they went to the Fantasy Suite.

Cindy’s Powerful Exit

Wednesday night’s finale revealed that Cindy made the decision to leave after their difficult conversation.

“He’s not interested in making any type of commitments for several years,” Cindy explained in a confessional. “I’m in my golden years—I’m 60 years old—and I’m not interested in being put on hold. He is just not my person.”

Her departure left Mel visibly shocked. “I’m shocked. The date with Cindy, it was perfect,” he said after walking her out. “I came in tonight thinking there was a future. But she quit… I don’t know what I’m gonna do.”

Meeting the Family and the Final Decision

With Cindy gone, Mel regrouped and introduced Peg to his two sons, Andre and Lucas, along with his college friend Diane. The meeting went exceptionally well, with Lucas telling Peg, “I think you’re, like, the perfect gal for my dad, because the energy—you help bring him up, the uplifting.”

When Peg asked what kind of partner would be ideal for their father, Lucas described someone “easygoing, not-too-much-drama, mellow” who “really enjoys life.” Both sons gave Peg their enthusiastic approval, with Mel noting, “Peg and my boys got along swimmingly, and getting that resounding thumbs up is wonderful.”

A Commitment—But Not a Proposal

In the finale’s closing moments, Mel chose Peg—though notably, he didn’t get down on one knee with a traditional proposal. Instead, he presented her with a ring that “represents our commitment to love, to give time to figure out together what our future holds.” He also gave her the final golden rose.

“I got the perfect gal right here,” Mel declared, with Peg adding, “I got the perfect guy.”

The unconventional ending reflects the complicated journey both took to reach this point. While Mel found his match in Peg, the season raised important questions about emotional availability, communication, and what commitment truly means in the golden years—questions that Cindy’s dignified exit brought into sharp focus.
