“Wake up, Neo.”

For fans of the mind-bending, leather-clad world of the digital simulation, those words have always been a call to adventure. But since the 2024 announcement that a fifth installment was in development, the “code” has been mostly silent. For two years, we’ve wondered if the project had been lost to the “Source” or if Warner Bros. was simply waiting for the right moment to reload.

Today, we finally have The Matrix 5 news we’ve been waiting for. Drew Goddard, the visionary behind The Cabin in the Woods and the writer of The Martian, has finally emerged from his “writing cave” to confirm that the simulation is very much still loading.

Inside the “Writing Cave”: Drew Goddard’s Progress Update

Speaking with ScreenRant during a press tour for his highly anticipated sci-fi epic Project Hail Mary, Goddard was asked the question on every fan’s mind: Is The Matrix 5 still happening?

“It’s still in the works,” Goddard confirmed. “I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.”

While “it’s being written” might sound like standard Hollywood boilerplate, it’s a vital sign of life for a franchise that many thought had reached its definitive end with 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections. Goddard’s “cave” comment suggests a deep-dive approach to the lore, likely trying to solve the puzzle of how to move forward after the meta-heavy conclusion of the last film.

A Franchise First: Moving Beyond the Wachowskis

Perhaps the most significant piece of The Matrix 5 news is the shift in leadership. For the first time in the franchise’s history, a film will be directed by someone other than a Wachowski.

Lana and Lilly Wachowski defined the aesthetic of the 21st-century action movie with the original trilogy. While Lilly sat out the fourth film, Lana returned to helm Resurrections as a solo director. For The Matrix 5, the torch is being passed to Goddard. However, the Wachowski DNA remains; Lana is officially on board as an Executive Producer, ensuring that Goddard’s vision doesn’t stray too far from the philosophical roots of the series.

Warner Bros. executive Jesse Ehrman previously teased that Goddard’s pitch will “advance the fantasy world without straying too far from what made the series a success.” This suggests a “back-to-basics” approach that might focus more on the world-building and high-concept action that made the 1999 original a cultural juggernaut.

The Neo and Trinity Factor: Will Keanu Reeves Return?

The million-dollar question—literally—is whether Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return as Neo and Trinity. At the end of Resurrections, both characters were essentially reborn as gods of their own simulation, ready to “remake the world.”

Keanu Reeves has been vocal about his loyalty to the brand. Back in 2021, he stated he would return for another film as long as Lana Wachowski was involved. With Lana in an executive producer role, the door is wide open for Neo’s return. However, at 61 years old, Reeves may be looking to transition the franchise to a younger lead—much like the “Legacy Sequel” models seen in Star Wars or Creed.

The Morpheus Dilemma: Will Laurence Fishburne Come Back?

One of the biggest sticking points for fans in recent years has been the absence of the original Morpheus, Laurence Fishburne. In Resurrections, the character was played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a sentient AI program.

In a surprising update from April 2025, Fishburne appeared on The View and addressed the possibility of returning for The Matrix 5. His response was cautious but open: it depends on “who is involved” and “how well the script has been written.”

Fishburne famously claimed he wasn’t invited back for the fourth film, noting that production “didn’t respond well” to his interest. If Goddard is looking to win back the “old school” fans, bringing Fishburne back into the fold would be the most effective way to do it.

The Ghost of Resurrections: Overcoming the “Flop” Narrative

There is no denying that The Matrix 5 is under immense pressure to perform. The Matrix Resurrections was a financial disappointment, failing to recover its $190 million budget at the box office. However, it’s important to remember the context: it was released during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and suffered from a simultaneous release on HBO Max (now Max).

Critically, the film holds a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes—a slight improvement over Revolutions, but far from the universal acclaim of the first movie. Goddard, who is also helping James Gunn map out the new DC Universe, is known for his ability to balance complex scripts with audience-pleasing spectacle. If anyone can navigate the “sophomore slump” of the revival era, it’s the man who made The Martian a household name.

The Historical Stakes of the Simulation

To understand why Warner Bros. is still betting on the Red Pill, you only have to look at the numbers:

  • The Matrix (1999): $467 Million
  • The Matrix Reloaded (2003): $741 Million
  • The Matrix Revolutions (2003): $427 Million

The franchise has generated billions in revenue and defined the “bullet time” era of cinema. In 2026, with AI and virtual reality becoming everyday realities rather than sci-fi fantasies, the themes of The Matrix are more relevant than they were thirty years ago.

Conclusion: Is the World Ready for a Fifth Entry?

Drew Goddard’s “writing cave” is currently the most important place in the sci-fi world. Whether he chooses to follow Neo and Trinity into their new reality or start fresh with a new set of “unplugged” rebels, the expectations are sky-high. Can a Matrix movie succeed without a Wachowski at the helm? Can it recapture the magic of the 1999 original while learning from the mistakes of the 2021 revival?

The truth is, we won’t know until the code is finally revealed. But with Goddard’s track record, we’re inclined to take the Red Pill one more time.
