To infinity and… back for more? Just when we thought we’d said our final, tearful goodbyes to the gang at the end of Toy Story 4, Pixar has pulled us back into the toy box. Today, the official trailer for Toy Story 5 finally arrived, and it’s leaning heavily into a problem every parent (and former kid) in 2026 understands: the war against screen time.

Slated for release on June 19, 2026, the fifth installment of this legendary franchise isn’t just a nostalgia trip. It’s a high-stakes battle between tradition and technology. If the teaser didn’t get your heart racing, the full trailer—complete with a poncho-wearing Woody and an army of Buzz Lightyears—certainly will. Let’s dive into our full Toy Story 5 trailer breakdown.

The Villain: Lilypad and the Threat of “Inertia”

The central conflict of Toy Story 5 introduces a foe more dangerous than Sid, Lotso, or Al’s Toy Barn combined: Lilypad. Voiced by the incredible Greta Lee (Past Lives), Lilypad is a sleek, “prickly” tablet that has completely captured Bonnie’s attention.

The trailer shows us a Bonnie who is no longer imaginative. She’s “inert,” staring at the glowing screen while her classic toys gather dust in the corner. As Jessie poignantly says into a walkie-talkie, “I’m losing Bonnie to this device.” It’s a heartbreaking shift for the series, moving from the fear of being “outgrown” to the fear of being “obsoleted” by an algorithm.

This tech takeover isn’t just happening in Bonnie’s room. The Toy Story 5 trailer breakdown reveals a world where “abandoned” toys are everywhere, displaced by children who prefer digital play. This sets the stage for a rescue mission that requires the one toy who knows exactly what it’s like to live “in the wild.”

The Return of the Cowboy (With a Shiny New Look)

The emotional core of the trailer is, of course, the return of Woody (Tom Hanks). When we last saw him, he was living a nomadic life with Bo Peep. But when Jessie reaches out, Woody doesn’t hesitate.

Interestingly, Woody has undergone some physical changes during his time as a “lost toy.” He’s sporting a rugged poncho—likely a nod to the “Man with No Name” Western tropes—and a very prominent, very shiny bald spot on the back of his head. It’s a hilarious and grounded touch that shows even plastic legends show their age.

But Woody isn’t coming back alone. The trailer teases a massive reunion, though we also see Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) facing his own identity crisis. In a stunning visual sequence, we see an entire army of “Newer Buzz Lightyears” (all seemingly oblivious to their toy status) being used as backup. It’s a callback to the original Toy Story’s Al’s Toy Barn scene, but scaled up for a modern “tech-army” vibe.

Meet the New Voice Cast (and Some Familiar Favorites)

Pixar has pulled out all the stops for the Toy Story 5 voice cast. While we’re excited to see Keanu Reeves return as the stunt-tastic Duke Caboom, the newcomers are stealing the show:

Matty Matheson as Dr. Nutcase: The Bear star voices a “tech-fearing” toy who is seen strapped to a kite in a tree, screaming about the impending doom of electronics.

Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants: A toilet-training tech toy that brings some much-needed cynical humor to the “Tech vs. Toys” debate.

Craig Robinson as Atlas: A cheerful, GPS-enabled hippo toy who represents the “friendly” face of technology.

Scarlett Spears as Bonnie: The Wicked star takes over the role of Bonnie, bringing a sweet but distant energy to the screen-obsessed 8-year-old.

We also get a glimpse of Forky and his new plastic knife bride, Karen Beverly (voiced by Melissa Villaseñor). The trailer opens with a stylized “wedding” in Bonnie’s mind that is pure Pixar magic. As Jessie says, “I now pronounce you husband and knife.” It’s a small reminder that even amidst the high-tech drama, the heart of these movies is still the weird, beautiful way kids play.

Is This the Final Frontier for Pixar?

The Toy Story 5 trailer breakdown proves that Pixar isn’t afraid to get existential. By making a tablet the villain, they are challenging the very nature of play in 2026. Can Woody and Buzz remind Bonnie—and the audience—that there’s no substitute for a toy you can actually hold?

Toy Story 5 Poster

The stakes have never been higher, and the animation has never looked crisper. Whether you’re here for the “Husband and Knife” jokes or the emotional weight of Woody’s return, Toy Story 5 is looking like the cinematic event of the summer.
