No, you’re not seeing double — the Emmys really did happen twice in the same year!
Let’s rewind. The 75th Emmy Awards, originally set for last September, were postponed to January 2024 due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. But fast forward to now: the 76th Emmys are back this Sunday, and they’re bringing star power with the father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy as hosts, live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on ABC. To qualify for this year’s celebration, TV shows, limited series, and made-for-TV films had to air between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024.
One of the biggest stories of the night? FX’s smash hit The Bear came in with a staggering 23 nominations — the most ever for a comedy in Emmy history! It kicked off the ceremony with a bang, snagging three of the first four awards, including wins for Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Jeremy Allen White, and Liza Colón-Zayas. But the streak hit a snag when Jean Smart (Hacks) edged out Ayo Edebiri for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy. The Bear bounced back with Christopher Storer taking home the award for Outstanding Directing, marking the show’s 11th win this season and setting a new record for most Emmys won by a comedy in a single year.
Hacks, however, wasn’t done just yet. It clinched two major honors: Outstanding Writing and a surprise win for Outstanding Comedy Series, leaving The Bear fans stunned.
On the drama front, Shōgun came into the night with a whopping 25 nominations and made history even before the ceremony started, scooping up 14 Creative Arts Emmys — the most ever for a single season! The epic continued its reign with Frederick E.O. Toye winning Best Directing in a Drama, followed by Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai both securing top acting honors. Naturally, Shōgun capped off the evening with the coveted Outstanding Drama Series award, pushing its total haul to a jaw-dropping 18 Emmys.
As for The Crown, its final season earned 18 nods, but it had a quieter night, with Elizabeth Debicki winning for Outstanding Supporting Actress. The Morning Show found its spotlight too, with Billy Crudup nabbing Outstanding Supporting Actor.
In the limited series categories, Baby Reindeer swept the board, winning Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series along with acting and writing wins for Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning. Jodie Foster took home Outstanding Actress for True Detective: Night Country, while Lamorne Morris snagged Supporting Actor for his role in Fargo.
