Fresh off his award-winning streak on FX’s The Bear, Jeremy Allen White is set to lead Netflix’s highly anticipated adaptation of André Aciman’s novel Enigma Variations. White will star as Paul, the enigmatic and complex protagonist navigating a lifetime of love, lust, and self-discovery.

The limited series is currently in development, and if greenlit, it will mark the second adaptation of Aciman’s evocative work. Fans of the acclaimed Call Me by Your Name—which garnered an Academy Award for best-adapted screenplay and catapulted Timothée Chalamet to stardom—have reason to be excited. The same deep emotional resonance and poetic storytelling that defined that film will now be explored in a new, daring format.
A Story of Desire and Identity
For those unfamiliar, Enigma Variations delves into the life of Paul, whose romantic and sexual pursuits remain as intense and unpredictable in adulthood as they were in adolescence. Set across picturesque locales like sun-soaked Italy and snow-dusted New England, Paul’s journey weaves together moments of passion, heartbreak, and fleeting connections. The novel’s official synopsis teases themes of identity and longing:
“Paul’s attachments are ungraspable, transient, and forever underwritten by raw desire. Ahead of every step Paul takes, his hopes, denials, fears, and regrets are always ready to lay their traps. Yet the dream of love lingers. We may not always know what we want. We may remain enigmas to ourselves and to others. But sooner or later, we discover who we’ve always known we were.”
White, whose career spans over a decade, is poised to bring Paul’s complexities to life. From his Emmy-winning portrayal of Carmy in The Bear to his 11-season tenure as Lip Gallagher on Shameless, White has proven he can handle emotionally layered roles with authenticity and grit.

A Stellar Creative Team
The series boasts an impressive creative lineup. Amanda Kate Shuman (The Wheel of Time, The Blacklist) will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with acclaimed director Oliver Hermanus (Living, Moffie) set to helm the project. André Aciman himself will also executive produce alongside White, ensuring the series stays true to the novel’s spirit.
