According to the official synopsis from Variety, the eight-episode series will serve as an origin story. Forget the established Mystery Inc. dynamic; this story finds childhood friends Shaggy and Daphne spending their final summer at camp when they stumble upon a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy. This puppy—who we obviously know as Scooby—has allegedly witnessed a supernatural murder.
The group is rounded out by Velma, described as a “pragmatic and scientific townie,” and a mysterious new kid in town named “Freddy.” The logline promises a “creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets,” suggesting that the “ghosts” in this version might not just be old men in rubber masks.
The “Stranger Things” Effect: What to Expect from the Tone
If the mention of “supernatural murder” didn’t give it away, the creative team behind the show certainly does. Showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (Citadel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) are teaming up with Berlanti Productions.
Greg Berlanti is the architect of the “CW-fication” of classic properties like Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Reports indicate that Netflix is aiming for a tone similar to Stranger Things—a blend of high-stakes horror, teen angst, and genuine supernatural elements. This isn’t the campy, fart-joke-filled romp of 2002; it’s a show about the trauma and secrets of a small town, viewed through the lens of a talking dog and his teenage best friends.

Casting Rumors: Who is Joining Mckenna Grace?
While Mckenna Grace is the first confirmed member of the gang, the internet is already on fire with fan-casts for the remaining three.
