Sydney Sweeney has undergone a remarkable transformation for her upcoming role as legendary boxer Christy Martin, as revealed in the first official image from the David Michôd-directed biopic “Christy.” The photo, shared by the Toronto International Film Festival, shows Sweeney in the ring wearing red gloves and white gear, her face fierce and determined, seemingly celebrating a victory.

A Complete Physical Overhaul

The most striking aspect of the first-look image is Sweeney’s dramatic physical transformation. The actress has completely shed her signature glamorous appearance, trading it for a gritty, muscular build that authentically captures the toughness of the boxing legend she portrays. With cropped hair, bruised skin, and an intensity that radiates from the photograph, Sweeney appears to have fully immersed herself in the role.

The transformation wasn’t achieved overnight. Sweeney dedicated three and a half months to intensive training, gaining over 30 pounds for the role. Her rigorous routine included weight training for an hour each morning, two hours of kickboxing at midday, and another hour of weight training in the evening.

Sweeney shared about the experience, “I loved it, my body was completely different. I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”

The Story Behind “Christy”

The biographical film chronicles the remarkable and tragic story of Christy Martin, who rose to become the most famous female fighter of the 1990s before surviving an attempted murder by her husband James V. Martin in 2010. Directed by David Michôd, who co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes, the film promises to capture both the triumph and tragedy of Martin’s extraordinary life.

The impressive cast includes Ben Foster as James V. Martin, alongside Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian (known for “Love Lies Bleeding”), Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad L. Coleman, and Tony Cavalero. Filming took place from September through November 2024.

Oscar Potential on the Horizon

While Sweeney has earned Emmy nominations for her standout performances in “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus,” she has yet to receive her first Oscar nomination despite her meteoric rise to superstardom. The “Christy” biopic could very well be the project that changes that trajectory, particularly given her dramatic physical transformation – a factor that historically tends to capture Academy Award attention.

As audiences await the film’s release, this first glimpse suggests that Sweeney has delivered what could be a career-defining performance, one that showcases not just her acting range but her commitment to authentically embodying one of boxing’s most compelling figures.
