A look at Daniel Radcliffe’s supportive gesture to the new generation, and what the remake means for the future of the Wizarding World.

The Wizarding World is bracing for its next decade with the upcoming premiere of HBO’s Harry Potter remake. With production for Season 1 underway, all eyes are on the new cast, especially Dominic McLaughlin, the actor chosen to shoulder the role of the Boy Who Lived. For many fans, there is only one true Harry, and his recent actions have offered a perfect, supportive balm to the fandom’s anxieties.

The original Chosen One, Daniel Radcliffe, the face of the massive cultural phenomenon of the 2000s, has publicly expressed his support for his successor. During an appearance on Good Morning America, Radcliffe revealed that he actually reached out to McLaughlin with a private letter sent through his contacts on the HBO production.

“I Hope You Have the Best Time”

Radcliffe’s message was pure encouragement, recognizing the immense pressure and once-in-a-lifetime experience that comes with the role. He stressed that he felt no obligation to reach out, but that he simply wanted to share well-wishes.

“I wouldn’t say that anyone who is going to play Harry has to [reach out]. I know a few people who are working on the production, so I wrote to Dominic and I sent him a letter, and he sent me a very sweet note back. I just wanted to write to him to say, ‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did — I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time.’”

While Radcliffe kept the details of McLaughlin’s response private, calling it “very sweet,” the exchange is a clear sign of the original star’s class and support for the continuation of the saga. It’s a literal passing of the torch, showing that the core of the Harry Potter spirit remains—even if the actors have changed.

A Glimpse of the Past

Radcliffe’s empathy comes from a place of deep understanding. His successful transition into a diverse and respected adult actor is rare for child stars, especially those tied to one of the biggest franchises in history. Witnessing the start of the new journey clearly resonated with him.

Seeing images of the new core trio—McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout—reminded the Now You See Me 2 star of his own magical beginnings:

“I just see these pictures of him and the other kids and I just want to hug them. They just seem so young. I just look at them and say, ‘Oh it’s crazy I was doing that.’ But it’s also incredibly sweet and I hope they’re having a great time.”

The new trio certainly looks the part, but the question remains: Can they capture the lightning in a bottle that the original films managed?

How Faithful Will HBO’s Remake Be?

The decision to remake the saga initially rubbed many fans the wrong way. Considering the original live-action series did a commendable job of adapting the books and shaping the childhoods of millions, skepticism is understandable.

However, the new episodic format offers a massive opportunity to tackle one of the movies’ biggest limitations: the runtime. When each novel had to be crammed into a single two-hour film, beloved details were inevitably trimmed, famously including the character of Peeves the poltergeist from the first book.

HBO has promised fans it will stick closely to the novels (via THR), with each season set to adapt one book. This expanded structure could finally give marginalized plotlines, detailed world-building, and minor characters the justice they deserve.

While we wait to see how faithful the series truly is, the supportive gesture from the original Harry Potter himself provides a warm, nostalgic moment, reminding us that the magic is ultimately bigger than any single actor.

The new Harry Potter series is currently filming and is aiming for a 2027 release.
