The shadows of Matt Reeves’ Gotham are growing longer, and it seems they’ve just claimed one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most beloved veterans. In a casting move that has sent shockwaves through the industry, Sebastian Stan—known to millions as Bucky Barnes—is reportedly joining the ensemble for The Batman: Part II. While DC Studios has officially maintained a “no comment” stance, the news marks a significant shift for the sequel, which is quickly becoming a refuge for high-profile MCU talent looking for a grittier change of pace.

A New Face for Harvey Dent?

While Sebastian Stan’s specific role remains officially under wraps, the rumor mill hasn’t been quiet. Industry insiders and fans alike have pointed toward one inevitable character: District Attorney Harvey Dent. The casting feels like a masterstroke for Reeves’ “Epic Crime Saga” aesthetic. Stan recently earned critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a young Donald Trump in The Apprentice, a performance that showcased his ability to play ambitious, morally flexible men grappling with power.

If Stan is indeed playing Harvey Dent, he follows in the footsteps of legends like Billy Dee Williams, Tommy Lee Jones, and Aaron Eckhart. However, in the grounded, rain-slicked world of Robert Pattinson’s Batman, a Sebastian Stan version of Dent would likely focus on the tragic psychological fracturing of a man trying to save a city that is already beyond repair. Whether we see the full transformation into Two-Face in this installment or if Reeves is playing the long game with a slow-burn origin remains to be seen, but the intensity Stan brings to his roles makes him a perfect foil for Pattinson’s brooding Bruce Wayne.

The Marvel to DC Migration Continues

Sebastian Stan isn’t the only Avenger setting foot in Gotham. The reports confirm that he will join Scarlett Johansson, who was recently revealed to be in talks for a major undisclosed role in the sequel. Some theories suggest Johansson could be playing Gilda Gold, the wife of Harvey Dent, which would create a fascinating onscreen reunion for the two Marvel stars. Other whispers point toward her playing a new love interest for Bruce Wayne, potentially filling the void left by a certain cat burglar.

The addition of Stan and Johansson represents a fascinating trend of established “superhero royalty” transitioning into the more experimental, “Elseworlds” style of Matt Reeves’ universe. For Stan, who has spent over a decade as a supporting pillar of the MCU in projects ranging from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to the recently released Thunderbolts*, this move allows him to lean into the character-driven, noir-inspired storytelling that The Batman pioneered in 2022.

While the new faces are drawing headlines, the established residents of Gotham are also preparing for their return. Variety has confirmed that Barry Keoghan is expected to reprise his role as the Joker. After a tantalizingly brief cameo in the first film and a haunting deleted scene that went viral, Keoghan’s “disfigured from birth” version of the Clown Prince of Crime is poised to play a larger role in the narrative, even if he remains behind the glass of an Arkham cell for now.

However, the sequel’s roster isn’t just about additions. In a surprising turn, Zoë Kravitz’s Selina Kyle is reportedly not returning for the second chapter. While some fans might find this disappointing, the creative decision aligns with the ending of the first film, where Catwoman left a flooded Gotham behind, declaring the city beyond saving. With Kravitz currently focusing on her blossoming directorial career following the success of Blink Twice, the timing seems to have worked out for both the actress and the story. By removing the romantic safety net of Selina Kyle, Reeves is forcing Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne back into a state of isolation, perfectly setting the stage for the psychological warfare to come.

Looking Toward the 2027 Premiere

Production for The Batman: Part II is slated to begin this spring, with Matt Reeves once again at the helm alongside co-writer Mattson Tomlin. The film is currently aiming for an October 1, 2027 release date, giving the creative team ample time to craft a follow-up that lives up to the massive expectations set by the original. Alongside the newcomers, we can expect the return of essential supporting players including Colin Farrell’s Penguin—fresh off his own successful HBO series—Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon.

As the Bat-verse expands, it’s clear that Reeves is less interested in a traditional “superhero sequel” and more focused on a sprawling, interconnected crime epic. With Sebastian Stan likely stepping into the shoes of Gotham’s “White Knight,” the stakes for the Caped Crusader have never been higher. Bruce Wayne may have learned to be a symbol of hope, but with a new District Attorney and an itching Joker on the horizon, he’s about to find out how quickly hope can turn to tragedy.
