Get ready for the ultimate superhero team-up. Mark Ruffalo is officially returning as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” marking his first Spider-Man film appearance and continuing the franchise’s tradition of pairing Tom Holland with seasoned Marvel veterans.

A Villain’s Return and a Vigilante’s Debut
The casting news doesn’t stop there. Michael Mando is reprising his role as Mac Gargan/Scorpion, the villain he first portrayed in 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming’s” post-credit scene, where he confronts Michael Keaton (Adrian Toomes/Vulture)
Meanwhile, Jon Bernthal brings his gritty Punisher to the big screen for the first time in the MCU—and his first movie appearance since 2008’s “Punisher: War Zone.”
This marks the most star-studded Spider-Man film yet, with three major Marvel characters joining Holland’s web-slinger for what promises to be an action-packed adventure.

Classic Marvel Team-Up Formula
Holland’s Spider-Man films have always followed the classic “Marvel Team-Up” comic formula, pairing the young hero with established MCU figures:
• Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in “Homecoming”
• Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in “Far From Home”
• Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in “No Way Home”

It has long been rumored and reported by insiders that Sony (who ultimately owns the film rights to Spider-Man) has a deal with Disney (who owns the character’s overall intellectual property (IP) and merchandising rights) that at least one major Marvel star must appear in each of the “Spider-Man” movies. So, we were just waiting to see which Marvel character was going to join “Brand New Day”. It appeared that it was possibly only going to be Punisher, who was already an exciting choice, but with the addition of The Hulk, “Brand New Day” takes this concept to the next level by stacking the deck with multiple heavyweight heroes and villains.
What to Expect
While plot details remain under wraps, expect the classic Marvel formula: Spider-Man, Punisher, and Hulk will likely clash before uniting against the real threat. With Scorpion as a confirmed antagonist, the film promises intense action sequences and character dynamics we’ve never seen before.
Destin Daniel Cretton directs from a script by Spider-Man veterans Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Production begins this month in England, with the film set to swing into theaters July 31, 2026.
For Ruffalo, this continues his 14-year MCU journey that began with “The Avengers” and has included everything from “Thor: Ragnarok” to Disney+’s “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” Now he’s ready to team up with Marvel’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man for the first time.
